  1. An easy solution to the Windows Update issues that have been occurring is Dial A Fix. A simple tool that does all the Windows Update fixes that take way to long to do manually. Dial A Fix knocks it out in about a minute or two. Check it out at http://wiki.djlizard.net/Dial-a-fix It has saved me a lot of time when I run into clients with Win Updates issue. I hope it helps you. Cheers, Stevens
  2. Client has a 5 year old Dell PowerEdge P4 server that just had the motherboard die. We don't want to invest in a new board. I want to take the SCSI controller and move it to a desktop that is not in use and temporarily run the Windows 2000 Server SCSI drive as the primary drive. I have to get that OS up again in order to figure out the database settings for this Platinum for Windows software that they use for inventory, accounting, the whole 9 yards. What would happen if I just installed the SCSI controller in the desktop, then change the boot order to have it boot off the Server 2000 SCSI drive? Is there a way to slave the SCSI drive and remove all the installed drivers (to give Windows Server 2000 a clean slate for the new desktop)? is this necessary? Thanks, Stevens
  3. I have seen problems with "svchost.exe" in all sorts of situations. Most common is spyware. I had a workstation just the other day with CPU topped out from svchost.exe. Ran every spyware/malware tool available. Ran the Hotfix posted here. Nothing... Ended up ripping out an old memory stick for s***s and giggles. Eureka! So, when you're banging your head against the monitor over the svchost.exe, keep in mind that it could even be a sign of bad RAM. Cheers, Stevens
  4. I tried it with Private and Public settings. Still can't see the workgroup computers, printers, or server shares. I read in Vista help that when working correctly it can take up to 15 minutes before recognizing XP machines... 'wonderful' I've given it more than 15 and still can't find a **** thing. Any other suggestions?
  5. I've got a laptop with Vista Home Premium. It cannot see the file server, printers, or any other systems in the network. UAC is off. User is a local administrator on the laptop. User account exists on the server (2003 Enterprise). It is on the correct workgroup. File sharing is enabled. I can ping the server from the Vista laptop. I can see the laptop when I "search for computers" on the server, but cannot access the shared folders. How do I access shares from the file server? Thanks, Stevens
  6. I have an environment with 5 laptops that are constantly roaming from wireless network to wireless network. To keep the users from switching outgoing mailservers all the time in Outlook, I setup gmail accounts for each user. I user their company's incoming and use gmail's outgoing server settings. This has worked great for all the laptops w/XP. Now I've got one with Vista, and it will not work even with the exact same settings in Outlook. It says the operation timed out waiting for response from outgoing server. If I switch to the local ISP's outgoing server, I don't have a problem. Any suggestions?
  7. I'm trying to install an HP 4220 Printer driver, but during the install a window appears saying that I dont't have "Administrative Rights." The user account is an administrator account. What do I need to do to give the user "Adminstrative Rights" for this workstation? Thanks for the help, Stevens
