  1. The 8E you're getting means a driver on the system attempted to write to an address that was specifically marked as read-only. I would only be able to suggest that you completely uninstall the ZyXEL software and drivers, and do a reinstall of an older known-good version.

    What was the reason for the upgrade, by the way?

    There is no facility in WinXP to uninstall a driver, which is not listed in Control Panel ---> Add or Remove Programs. If there is a way to do it, let me know how...

    The reason was that the older version of the ZyXEL WiFi utility could not allow entering a WiFi password. The edit box simply didn't work.

  2. I have a very simple issue, but hard to solve.

    Hardware and software:

    * WinXP Pro SP3.

    * WiFi USB dongle, ZyXEL G-220 v2.

    * ZyXEL WiFi Utility, allows Access Point mode. Without it, dongle works in client mode only, so other clients can't connect to PC (which is what I need).

    * WiFi client connecting to PC: iPod Touch.

    What I did and/or what happened that lead to this issue:

    * Changed version (installed new one) of ZyXEL G-220 v2 Wireless Adapter Utility ---> this was changed by me. Changing it back does not help.

    * Driver version of ZyXEL WiFi dongle (G-220 v2) changed, not sure how or why, but it is now a 2006 driver, instead of 2007 (or even 2008, don't remember exactly) ---> I don't remember changing this one, but it changed somehow. I can't seem to be able to install a newer driver now.

    Problem:

    When I try to run the ZyXEL G-220 v2 Wireless Adapter Utility

    "D:\Program Files\ZyXEL\ZyXEL G-220 v2 Wireless Adapter Utility\ZyXEL G-220 v2.exe"

    I get a BSOD, saying:

    А problem has been detected and Windows has been shut down to prevent damage to your computer.

    An attempt was made to write to read-only memory.

    Technical information:

    *** STOP: 0x000000BE

    *** NDIS.sys - address BAE67898 base at BAE4A000, datestamp 48025d03

    Also, when trying to update the WiFi USB dongle driver to newer version, getting this:

    ---------------

    Cannot Install this Hardware

    An error occurred during the installation of the device

    The name is already in use as either a service name or a service display name.

    Click Finish to close the Wizard.

    Many thanks for any help!

  3. UPDATE:

    * Changing PSU didn't help (tried 400W Fortron PSU).

    * I managed to salvage an old Win2000 Pro install, and it worked just fine - booted 10 out of 10 times, no BSODs, no crashes, no freezes. WinXP Pro continued to have problems, regardless of Win2K working fine.

    * Problem was fixed by changing motherboard + CPU + videocard (I suppose my AGP videocard is OK, but the new motherboard is PCI Express, so no way to use the AGP card).

  4. I did some testing - tried doing a clean install of WinXP Pro SP2, but the problems were there even with the clean install (system booting 1-2 times out of 10).

    I also tried moving my HDD to another system (different motheboard and chipset) - everything worked fine, my old WinXP install (full of software, games, etc) and the new clean install booted perfectly, 10 out of 10 times. So, it is either the PSU or the motherboard. I’m planning to try another PSU, then if that fails, change motherboard and CPU (I want to get a dual-core Athlon).

  5. I tried booting into safe mode, same problem, so I think that rules out any driver issue.

    Also, I tried booting into Win2003 (which I also have installed), same problem, although I do know that my Win2003 install is fine (never had a problem with it). It could be HDD problem, bad blocks or something else...

    Yes, PSU, I will change the PSU soon, hopefully that will fix it...

    Edit: Spoke too soon. It seems Win2003 is OK. I will have to do a clean install of WinXP now, maybe that will fix it...

    Edit: Specs -

    * DFI NFII Ultra Infinity motherboard (Socket A AMD) with NVidia NForce2 Ultra 400 chipset (NVidia SoundStorm audio built-in)

    * AMD Athlon XP 3000+ CPU (32-bit, 2.1 GHZ, 400 MHZ FSB)

    * 2 GB DDRAM (2 x 1 GB Kingston HyperX)

    * Chaintech GF6800GT AGP 256 MB

    * 2 ATA + 2 SATA HDDs (Maxtor 60 GB & Hitachi 250 GB, Maxtor 300 GB & Seagate 500 GB)

    * 1 ATA CD-RW (Teac 48x)

    * Logitech MX 510 mouse @ PS/2 port

    * Standard PS/2 Compaq keyboard

    * lots of USB devices - Canon LiDE 25 scanner, generic USB Card Reader, USB HDD Enclosure (Spire GigaPod III), 3 USB Flash drives (Corsair, AData, SuperTalent)@Hama 4-port USB hub, XFX gamepad, Mustek Webcam.

    * 2 PCI cards - 1 3Com NIC 100-Mbit, 1 USB 2.0 4+1 ports card

    * 1.44 MB Floppy

  6. Hello, I have this very annoying problem with my WinXP Pro SP2 install.

    Very often I’m unable to boot into WinXP. The boot process starts, and the progress bar starts moving, but after 10-15 progress bar motions the progress bar stops updating. The system has frozen/locked up/hanged. I need to restart the computer (via the Reset button on the case) like 10-15 times in order to boot into Windows.

    Now, I probably can fix this by doing a clean install, but - I don’t have the time to reinstall all the stuff (including Borland C++ Builder 6, Visual Studio 6 + Service Pack, Visual Studio 2005 + Service Pack), and I’m quite sure that after 2-3 weeks the problem will appear again, making the clean install useless. I tried a Repair install, which preserves all programs and data, that didn’t help.

    So I want to try and fix this. I know it is not the RAM and not the videocard, as both were replaced and that didn’t help. It could be:

    * PSU - bad or not enough power, will try to replace it.

    * Damaged motherboard? - not sure

    * CPU overheat - need to try to replace cooler.

    * Something else - Windows/Registry/etc corruption maybe?

    Thanks in advance for any help!

    Note: It also freezes in Windows itself, but quite more rarely than it freezes during startup.

  7. You don't "find" them. Just click Start on your Start menu, then click "Run...". After that, enter sfc /scannow into the Open: box (note the space after sfc), and press Enter. sfc is the command, /scannow is just a parameter of the sfc command, and isn't a command by itself. You will need to insert your original WinXP setup CD into the CD/DVD drive. A progress bar will appear, and it will take some minutes to check all your files. After it is done, restart the computer and try Internet Explorer again. If the problem is still there, do a Repair from the WinXP boot CD.

    P.S. Sorry I didn't reply earlier...

    P.P.S. It would be nice if you said what is the exact text of the error messages you are getting.

  8. Your hardware uses certain address ranges and take from the 4gb

    A 32-bit Microsoft desktop operating system will NEVER see 4gb of memory to the system; thats the design and its limitations.

    If I understand this correctly, Windows programs can use only up to 3 GBs of the RAM, but the remaning 1 GB isn't left unused - it is used by the system/kernel... If the original poster is using WinXP Home though, it would be better to try Pro instead.

  9. What is the exact text of the 2 error messages (inlcuding the caption of the dialog box)? Is there an OK button only in the error window, or other buttons as well?

    If you think some system files could be missing/damaged, try running SFC /SCANNOW with WinXP's CD insterted into the CD/DVD drive. This will restore any altered/missing files.

  10. The problem seems to appear when installing from a CD that has SP2 + updates up to Feb 06.

    Problem was fixed after installing WinXP Pro SP2 from a CD just with SP2 integrated and no further updates. So if someone encounters the same issue, just try using a CD just with SP2 integrated and no other updates.

  11. Thank you jaclaz!

    Then I'll go for 2 seperate videocards(VGA).

    Is it easy to install? I think XP have this feature already?

    Yes, even Win98 supports this. Just buy (or find) a PCI videocard, then it's easy to set up.

  12. I hope someone here will help with this, I have been unable to solve this problem for almost an year!

    The problem is the following - (running on WinXP Pro SP2) some installations, which use the Windows Installer system, have this behaviour - the installer starts, I can choose installation type/files to install/installation path, but when the actual copying/installing of files starts, all installer windows disappear, and there is NO installation progress window, as there should be. Installers that have this problem include vmWare, C++ Builder 6, Sun Java JRE. The installation still runs in the background, and silently succeeds or fails. It fails, for example, with C++ Builder 6, because it is on 2 CDs, and when all files needed from CD1 have been copied, NO prompt appears to insert CD2, and the installation cannot find the files needed from CD2, and thus it fails (Event ID in WinXP Event Viewer - 11708).

    Installing Windows Installer 3.1 v2 does NOT help.

    I got this problem even with a fresh, clean install of WinXP Pro SP2 (installed just a couple of vital drivers).

    I'm thinking it could be a problem with the WinXP Pro install CD (it has SP2 integrated + updates up to Feburary), BUT when installing from the same CD using vmWare, installs function fine.

    I could try installing from a CD with just SP2 integrated (without the updates after that), BUT this is getting very annoying and I want to solve this problem somehow, and not try to avoid it.

    IF someone knows what could cause this problem and/or how to fix it, I will be very thankful to them...

    I'm using Win2003 Server as well, and NEVER had this problem there (I assume its because Win2003 contains Windows Installer 3.1 by default, unlike WinXP Pro).
