  1. Well, XP is a valid upgrade path, 2003 is not.And if XP was sluggish, it wasn't XP - it was drivers or 3rd party software, or you were on a Cyrix or Via CPU . XP on it's own, even on a lower-end P3 with 256MB RAM, is snappy. actually amd athlon 3400 2ghz with 1 gb memory. no external add ons. even after tweaking it was still sluggish slow and like wadding through molasses compared to winme. the shocking thing was i could run at least 4 cpu multi tasking intensive applications in winme like mpg encoding,p2plike kaza or dc++,bittorrent and web browsing without a problem. with xp you click and you need to wait a minute for the screen to come up.dreadful os system.
  2. I UPGRADED FROM winme to xp successfully but found it slow and not snappy at all.
  3. I have a super stable winme and i want to upgrade to windows 2003 - ( i do NOT want to upgrade to xp.i have a xp hard drive which was successfully upgrded from winme to xp and then to nt file system.was not impressed with xp at all.) ONLY reason is to improve/solve the memory problem with win98/winme which means conventional memory is limited to 2mb no matter how much ram you add. QUESTION IS HOW WOULD I UPGRADE TO SERVER 3003. once i have upgraded then i will configure it as a desktop. what version should i use of server 2003. remember i want it to have 48 lba large hard drive support. my winme already has it from the patch by lexx who was banned by some id***. and of course the server 2003 should be uptodate with service packs. also has anyone upgraded from winme to server 2003? were there any issues? how did it work out.IS IT FAST.IS STABLE.IS IT OK?
  4. Look. just download PORTABLE FIREFOX from portableapplications.com or google it....ok? no install required.... you dont need ie7 at all... i have ie 5.5 and i use firefox but have switched to firefox portable....it is very very good and very lightweight.....
  5. yes... yes that's right seagate have announced they are stopping production of pata/ide hard drives.... in NOVEMBER 07!... last chance to buy them... i am dismayed....the traitors. we need to get sata drivers for windows 98 and winme....urgently.... how do we do this?? anyone know?
  6. Virtual PC 5.1 should do the trick. It divides large hard disk images into smaller pieces. It officially supports Windows 98 and ME. And unlike Qemu it is accelera ed so the performance is good. But it has also an annoying bug. If you leave the driver statically loading at boot your Windows will (in-)frequently fail to boot. The walkaround is to load the driver manually through Device Manager, and disable it when you've finished. VPC 5.1 is the last version officially supporting Windows 9x. You can also try previous versions, it is possible that they don't have the bug I mentioned. where can i get virtual pc 5.1 or earlier? thanks.
  7. I wish to confirm that win me operates much more smoothly with net frame 2.00 and i can run super mpeg encode encoder, soulseek p2p,bitspirit torrent, aol heavy connection and firefox and irfanview all at the same time .... ALL AT THE SAME TIME... i do web browsing too... open /close folders.... it's very smooth... thye newer files ARE making a difference.... regardless of system file replacement.... have you got a list of the files in netframe?? could you spread the word to all win me and 98 users?? text,email,phone... send group text to ll your friends...
  8. when it was installing i saw lots and lots of files being unpacked... my windows directory size increased from 1.2 gb to 1.5gb after!. you can uninstall it from control panel.
  9. so can virtualbox run in winme or not? qemu seems to be too complicated and slow and is more of an emulator rather than a virtual machine. also if i did installvmware or virtualbox in winxp could i simply copy over my existing winme installation or do i have to actually instal it from an iso file. reason is i dont want re-install 1200 applications again. i have copied many ,many times my winme installation to different hard drives simply by using copy/paste or using unstappable copier version 1.97 and it has worked perfectly after setting the active partition to c: from dos using fdisk from a floppy. so the question could i do the same inside the virtual machine.jus copy/paste the windows me files as i dont want to re-install 1200 applications.
  10. Hey, I installed netframe on winme 2 weeks ago as ineeded to use an image processing software and this was a prerequiste. i have noticed that it increased the size of my windows directory from 1.2 gb to 1.5 gb but the system seems to run much more smoothly on multitasking and hardly any out of memory errors. my system before it was pretty quick and fast any way but running programs cpu/memory intensive programs like super and running multiple applications like browsers p2p at the same time etc.. etc made it seem clunky because of the memory issues which 9x suffers from but after installing netframe it seems to bea lot smoother since. anyone else notice this. i have over 1200 prgrams installed on my c drive. my orginal intention was to remove net frame after i had finished with the software as it increased with wondows directory by a 300mb but now as it seems to have improved performance i have left it installed. anyone else have experienc of this? the netframe.exe i used is 22.960 megs in size. could you lot try it on yours and report back?
  11. I want to know to know if any virtual machine software is available which runs on winme. this is so that i can run win2000 or xp in the virtual machine and in the virtual mahine create a ntfs file system to overcome the 2gb fat file size limit in dealing with largo iso files from 4 to 8 gb in size. ...and no i do not want to run winme in a win xp virtual machine as my winme has 1200 programs installed on it. thanks.
  12. Oh no not at all. I like to hear others opinions. Do you think Gates think fair? Nope... it's business baby! Excuse me but you are wrong.... Bill Gates created the entire computer industry. Without Bill Gate there would be no internet...no computers. The only computers would be ones that filled an entire room operated by pimple faced geeks and nerds with glasses in his mothers basement.,.. Bill Gates is very smart. he is a lovely man. he gave at leat $1000 million at least to poor people.no other billionaire has done that.Other billionaires just clutch the money to their chest right into the grave. Bill gates had vision and intelligence. He is so smart he amassed $80 billion. he created a $120 buillion company called microsoft. stop attacking bill gates.... he has done so much for the world. he invented windows 95,98,98se,winme,win2k,win2003,winnt,winxp,windows vista..... 98% of ll computers use windows. a billion computers using windows without being a geeky nerd in his mothers basement.
  13. YES...YOU ARE RIGHT. it's not vcache based butsomething else... what did you adjust in msconfig? i have only the bare essentials enabled in msconfig...
  14. This is the next problem that needs to be addressed in win9x and in winme. this is caused by lack of CONVENTIONAL memory and occurs REGARDLESS of how much ram you have installed.... look in google"conventional memory" for more info... "you do not have sufficent memory to run this program...close one or more programs and try again..." this comes up regardless of how much ram memory you have installed and all the various memory managers dont work to resolve this problem... i have tried over 15 programs... you may notice windows gets slower and slower after a reboot and then you will this message after running heavy programs... "you do not have sufficent memory to run this program...close one or more programs and try again..." i understand from an article that the issue is CONVENTIONAL MEMORY which windows me assigns to buttons,icons,etc,frames...etc..etc.. for some reason not clear it cant address more than 32 meg or 64 meg...cant remember the figure in the article.. i cant remember the article now. the question is can this be fixed? Its vital for it to be be fixed so that it can compete with latest bloatware of vista.... vista is supposed to have really advanced memory management so this will not happen says Bill Gates the inventor of the modern computer. so what would need to be amended in winme dll wise or kernal wise to allow this to happen... "you do not have sufficent memory to run this program...close one or more programs and try again..." :realmad:
  15. HELLO i use windows me and i have installed the patch and tested it.... it works fine... i suggest u test it by copy/pasting large data flies...using 1 2 4 8 16 32 method i.e u double the data and copy/paste it ad repeat... then check the files by playing them if its dvd vob files...etc.... BUT U MUST REPORT BACK... i too am very grateful to LLEX doing this...... i am amazed microsoft never wrote the upgrade patch...i guess they just want your money for the dreadful xp....
  16. These seems to be no Win9x support for ATI® RADEON XPRESS 200 chipset - as you can see here: http://www.ecs.com.tw/ECSWeb/Downloads/Pro...=35&LanID=0 Petr thanks petr ..yes petr i did check the ecs site and its lamentable that they did not put drivers for 9x at all... i emailed them but they never replied.... llex i dont recall seeing any mention of the word sata in the bios at all.... i wonder if any utility would allow winme to be used with sata drives....
  17. HELLO! i have been using win me for over 5 years and i have 1050 applications installed. 800 in the programs folderand 200 in the unzipped files folder.... yes thata right 1050 applications...i kid you not... win me runs very well.its stable fast and responsive... i discovered the secret to make it like this to disable system restore...disable msn and disable upnp... upnp makes winme run as a server causing frequent crashes and instability....also disable dcom as well.. once you do the above it becomes very stable... utilities exist at www.grc.com for you to do this with a single click.... dcombob.exe shootthemessenger.exe unpnp.exe noshare.exe as a result its fast stable and i can run 8 HEAVY programs at the same time easily...eg soulseek,...dc++...bitseek....mpeg conversion...ao9.0l connect..mozilla and i.e 5.5 and nero 6.00... all on 512 meg ram... i can only run 4 HEAVY programs on xp even after all tweaks.. i have a ecs 482 m motherboard and an athlon 3200+ processor.... i have a question though is there sata hard drive support in winme? or a driver for winme for sata support.... i test ran winme on a sata drive but it was running in dos compatibility mode.. ... also remember this you can copy/paste the windows folder PLUS tail end root files to another active partition on another hard drive and it will boot!!! you cant do this with win 2k or xp. yes thats right! also you can basically use unstoppable copier freeware to copy c: from one harddrive to another and it will boot! this means its easy to back up or clone... in fact i have 3 copies of the winme on 3 partitions on 1 hard drive using bootmagic!!!! i can boot into any of the 3 partitions!!!! also i have done experiments with the subfolders in the windows directory... for example i zip or winrar fonts and cursers and other things not immediately being used and delete the originals in that subfolder...leaving zipped copies in that subfolder....this reduces the file numbers and saves space making it very fast and smooth...remember i have 1050 applications installed.... i suggest some of you try this out after backing your data up.....and report back...
  18. Do you really think that there is something like "48-bit LBA capable chipset"? Petr Most of them implement passthrough, so reads/writes are passed directly through the IDE bus and to the device, but I wouldn't be surprised if some of them do something with the requests besides directly giving them to the devices. hello i have installed the 48lba esdr.pdr to windows me and tested it on a seagate 160 mb hard drive and also on a 200gb maxtor hard drive.... it seems to be fine... yes,yes i did fill the drives to the brim by coping/pasting files using 2,4,8,16,32 method...i.e doubling a file then pasting it again and again... next week i will try with a 250 gb samsung drive..... once again thanks for your hard work for these patches which i have burned to dvd and copied for safe keeping..... the next thing is to fix the memory problem in winme.....so that we dont need to keep rebooting after running lots of programs..... also another thing is to zip or winrar files within the windows directory... eg fonts cursers themes games, etc, this makes windows faster by reducing the number of files in the windows directory.... i compress them and make them into self extracting exe files using winrar or winzip.... then delete the originals.... if i need anything i just double click the exe file..... i suggest you do the same....or try it yourself.... 19. You are very rude. I am American and we dont tolerate that. I did read the rules and it actually mentioned xplite and nlite....maybe its YOU who needs to read the rules...
  20. Tiny XP is winxp WITH A LOT OF THE BLOATWARE REMOVED USING XPLITE and NLITE.... Many of the useless services have been removed. Other versions of slimmed versions of winxp are barely naked winxp sp2 corporate edition and stripped to the bone xp sp2 corporate edition. the size of the iso is about 103 to 165 meg... I have downloaded these using bit torrent but not got around to installing them...i use windows me which is very fast and responsive compared to win xp which feels so slow and sluggish....even after i disabled more than 23 services!...and after applying all tweaks!!....its so rubbish.... In windows me i can run 8 different programs likecpu intensive avi file encoding and if i click on the tray the windows of other programs appears right away from being minimised ...in xp in click on the tray i need to wait 2 minutes for it to appear!...this is so stupid.....i mean xp supposed to improve things... problem with winme is the need for rebooting frequently every 12 to 24 hours due to heavy usage of programs... the Tiny Xp slimmed down versions are different and the tiny xp beast edition is optimised for gaming and has internet explorer removed letting the user use FF or opera or firebird... Other versions of tiny xp are optimised for speed and also include third party software... just look up tiny xp in google.... if you have used do report back as to if it is faster and more responsive then normal xp.... it only takes about 10 to 15 minutes to install according to reports.... you can google for them..
  21. No, they're supposed to stay highlighted permanently until you click somewhere else. yes...you are correct but if i move the mouse over the highlighted files WITHOUT CLICKING the highlighting dissapears... by the way i am impressed by your large disc support work....which reminds me to say if its possible to solve windows 98/me memory problem....as you may know win98/me can only address 32 mb of memory for the system this memory is allocated to buttons,icons,frames,etc...this is REGARDLESS of how much physical ram is installed...and for this reason if you have too many windows open or programs running you will get the message that "there is not enough memory to run a program close some programs and try again" message.. .. supposedly ths problem doesnot occue in win2k/winxp. but the question is can this memory problem be patched or fixed?
  22. JUST DELETE ENUM KEY IN hklm and win98 will redetect all new hardware fter a few re-boots....look in google... deleteing enum in hklm....
  23. can you help me solve this windows me problem? you know when you highlight files to move ,cut ,copy them and you move the mouse or curser away and they stay highlighted and if you move the mouse over the files they still stay highlighted as long as the mouse is moving and even after the mouse/curser stops moving they will stay highligted for about 0.5 second before the highlighting disappears... in my case the highlighting disappears instantly if i move the curser over highlighted files....this is very annoying as it means i cant move the curser/mouse over the highlighted files as the highlighting disappears instantly..... is there a fix for this? a value in the registry which would fix this? I checked the registry and no obvious mention about this...i checked google oo.... this problem only occured after i re-installed windows me over it self.... there must be a registry setting to change the mouse hover delay from zero back to 0.5 seconds.. thanks.
