  1. Thank you sir. Very much appreciated! I'll give it a shot since I try to wait for final versions before doing anything else.
  2. There's nothing special to bringing the install down to that size... just remove just about everything imaginable. I got mine down to about 220MB with PF disabled. It boots up so fast the scrollbar didn't get to scroll. This is with nLite 1.2. As for usefulness... I just need the bare minimum to get iTunes and PowerDVD working for my CarPC. So with the drivers and applications loaded, I can probably get away with a 512MB card. Once I get the navi software, that's another mess to resolve.
  3. With iTunes 6/7, I cannot get it to detect an Audio CD once I insert it. CD diagnostics sees the drive. With iTunes 4.9, I keep getting an error message that I am missing CD Burning components on startup. I left off the IMAPI CD Burning option with nLite, so I wonder if this is required for Audio CD playback and ripping in iTunes?
  4. Alright everyone, especially newbies! I stripped XP down to just Media Player 6.4 as a member here has suggested. This is the bare minimum CarPC setup that'll run iTunes and [now] Media Player with hopes to playback DVD and DVD-Audio as well as decode the AC-3 stream. This is SP1 only, and just about everything has been removed. Install size with VM disabled prior to optimization and drivers is 264MB. My smallest ever was 244MB, but that's without Media Player 6.4 and ACM support. I am waiting for my MSI 915GM board to arrive before I start some real testing and installations. On my Athlon XP 2500+ @ 1411MHz, 1GB RAM, nForce2, and 4GB hard drive, XP boots up so fast the status bar didn't get to scroll. With mobo drivers, KX Project, and ATI, the status bar barely gets halfway. I haven't even optimized the system other than a simple defrag, and it boots up faster than my main PC. Although this is useless now, my correctly modified boot screen for SP1 is now working (with "Professional" removed). Just imagine how much quicker it'll be with a 40MB/s RW transfer rate of a Sandisk Extreme IV running on my CF SATA adapter! (in theory at the moment) Last_Session.ini
  5. Installshield was having issues with Minlogon (Default User). Initially I thought Installshield was failing because of the RO attribute with the \Local Settings\Temp folder. On a side note, even without MinLogon, I noticed everything has the RO attribute on them. I can add/remove/create files and folders, but they all have the RO attribute. After re-installing and leaving Winlogon alone to keep the Admin account, I was able to run Setup.exe programs fine. I have not tried to copy stuff from Program Files over since I'm not sure how they'll react without registry changes. Since it's a spare PC, I don't mind screwing it up ahhaha. After blowing away 2 CD-Rs, you are correct about my BSoD issue. To add to that, I forgot my ntoskrnl.exe replacement was an SP2 version. So anything SP2 going into an SP1 installation caused the PROCESS1_INITIALIZATION_FAILED BSoD. ^_^ I added WMP 6.4 + ACM Codec to the configuration. K-Lite Codec Pack has been downloaded to test DVD Playback, AC3, and DVD-Audio support. Let me know if anyone has other suggestions. Thank you sir for the advice! XP boots up so fast on this crappy 4GB drive my current PC with the 74GB Raptor pales in comparison! [EDIT] I notice everything on my main PC has the RO attribute applied as well. I never noticed this. I find it quite strange. The same thing happened at work as well with some network folders.
  6. My CarPC prototype is very much stripped down since I'll be running iTunes, PowerDVD, and maybe some MAME for demonstration. No networking, Internet,... zippo! After integrating SP2, I decided to go back to SP1 without any hotfixes because of boot performance. I stripped XP down to roughly 244MB after the install. With MinLogon enabled, the computer boots up so fast the status bar in the doesn't get to scroll. This is on a crappy 4GB drive with a maximum 20MB/s transfer rate and no optimization or driver installs. Setup.exe programs are NOT working at the moment, so I was wondering what dependencies are required. It errors out when I try to run it. THX and excellent work Dino! I am satisfied with this setup just as long as I can get the installers working and verify the system can run without stability issues. I had a bunch with SP2 integrated, so I'm back to the basics.
