  1. nope, this does not work. it is possible that what i have requested has not been understood: i am talking about an annoying windows automatic update message that pops out form the tray after you have installed updates and practically obliges you to reboot when you do not want to. When you click on "restart later", windows xp's idea of "later" is that you need constant reminders, say about every five minutes. that's when it reminds you again. annoying. anyone know how to get rid of this behaviour?
  2. i enabled this... see what happens in future. .
  3. i have automatic updates turned on. "download updates for me but let me chose when to install them". so the updates download automatically and then i install them. keep working and then i get this terribly;y annoying pop-out window every few minutes asking me to restart my computer. any way to turn this off? it's really annoying.
  4. They do serve a purpose, that is to restore the Windows files to their previously non-updated versions. However, most people don't do that because you wouldn't want to undo a security fix for some sort of 0-day security flaw that "crap out there" is trying to exploit. Especially if you don't have any protection (firewall). No, Windows Updates verifies that info with the .CAT files located in: C:\WINDOWS\system32\CatRoot\{F750E6C3-38EE-11D1-85E5-00C04FC295EE} <(the numbers and letters may be different for you) just went to MS update after deleting all those files and folders... and the updates i had listed to install by the update site were still at zero KB. so i went to the CAT folder you mentioned and deleted the cat files with the KB numbers of those 0KB files on the update site. Just gone back to the MS update site to see what happens now... still at zero....
  5. Yes, they are the backups for uninstalling a hotfix, however, that is highly recommended against. It won't do any harm to your system by removing them. Check out my blog post about system maintenance here. so what you're saying is that i could (and should) delete all those folders in C:\windows that begin with $NtUninstallKBxxxxxxx? as well as the $hf_mig$ folder? that they serve no purpose? thx. just one question... i had always thought, perhaps erroneously, that the MS windows update site checked those exact folders to see which updates one was lacking... if that is the case, then if i deleted all those folders it would report that i needed to install all those updates again. plz enlighten me about that if you can...
  6. correct, i have found reference to them in my windows folder. so what do i do? delete them in the windows folder? thx.
  7. i have faithfully updated my winxp sp2 from the ms website. What i have left are 4 or 5 security updates which show 0 KB. What does this mean?
  8. I jsut expected you to know what you did. what is svcpack.inf?? You know, I think you are right, now that i come to think of it, I think that cd was a winxp sp1 cd + various hotfixes I had downloaded.
  9. you are a genius, dude. that does the trick. the file is svcpack.INF just for the record so folks know.
  10. i tried this method and it doesn't allow me to slipstream because I am using winxpsp1 and it says that it cannot work with already integrated software.
