  1. Hello! I have a user whose recycle bin upon a request to delete files, will do so but then bring up a messge saying "are you sure you want to remove WINDOWS". The odd thing is, it only happens when the user is offline. I've been through a lot of potential fixes included viewing and deleting the files in safe mode via dos but to no avail. At one point I got this: "Cannot remove folder D@1: This operation is supported only when you are connected to the server". Its a dinger of a problem, not show stopping but annoying. Another odd thing is that the dir appears to called something entirely different when viewed offline via cmd window. A huge virtual beer for any solution! Cheers Ixy
  2. Hello and thanks for the replys. BJ: I think that might be the best solution but I'm not in a position to make that call as yet. It would help further if I had a device to work with but as yet I dont. Anyway, I cant find a PCMCIA modem that suits the requirement and I think that slot in the device is only for 3G cards. I'll investigate the other option today. Thanks again guys.
  3. My ongoing WIFI saga now requires me to hunt down such a card. Its basically to stick into a fortigate 60 B and allow internet traffic to be routed down it. So far I cant find one. Does anyone know if one exists?? thanks in advance
  4. Yeah, we have a service provider doing a LAN and infrastructure survey and they have agreed to do a wifi survey also. I now need to wait until that is performed before any piloting is done. Actually still waiting for our vendor to confirm they have the ap/router we want. Need to find an ADSL capable PCMCIA card also so we can route traffic out onto the internet and between sites if needs be. Was looking at a fortigate 60 b adsl but its out of production now. Actually might have found an alternative! I'll post details.
  5. Ok, that sounds fair. The company will occupy just one building so that simplifies it a bit. I'm looking at a couple of wireless dualband bridging kits as I think there might be a requirement to cross subnets. Am I right in thinking that I cant do that because we will be using 802.11i (probably) which doesnt yet support bridging?? Really appreciate the input by the way!
  6. Well, Lenovo's access connections application is not too bad afterall. I think this might be practical. Looking at a fortwifi router/AP or two as well. I hope this stuff is usefull to other peeps that find themselves landed with a big first project involving WIFI :DDD I'll keep posting what i try and the results etc. Am I getting this point correct: Bridging AP's will enable users to roam from one location to another as well as access printers or such on a different subnet?? This is hard, I wanna play falcon instead
  7. Thanks Mordac. I'll see what else is out there but the log off might be the best path of least resistance for the moment.
  8. Another thought occured to me. Say a user comes in to the office in the morning, connects to our wireless LAN and then wants to join the wired network back at their desk. I guess there is no slick way of doing this other than logging off the laptop and then logging back onto the domain once redocked? I thought about access connections from lenovo but it relies on the user being capable of selecting the correct profile etc. Appreciate any thoughts
  9. Thanks Cluberti, I'll have a look at that.
  10. Ok, many thanks for that! There seems to be a lot of conflicting views on how best to do this but I guess thats par for the course I'll read a bit more and see how it goes. Thanks again.
  11. Many thanks for the pointers mordac85! Regarding the DHCP scope, I guess that might need to be dynamic as the business need changes (which it does frequently ) Would you recommend using a win2003 server to run DHCP or would it make more sense to allow whatever router I employ to dish out the ip's??? Like I said, I'm pretty new to networking so apologies if these are dumb quzzies :DD Thanks again mate! Also, can I change my default flag to a Scottish one???? :DD not so important @D
  12. Hello all, About to implement a wireless network at work but never done it before. I've read and re-read a lot of tutorials and papers etc on the best way to do it and I've come up with the following. I create WAPs at various points around the offices (using 802.11 a,b or g (not sure what yet). Set up a network access server running RADIUS which will interface with a server running AAA. Employ WEP/WPA and TKIP for encryption. I know this seems a bit clumsy, apologies, I'm in a hurry but do the basic elements make sense?? Can anyone recommend a better way to do this?? I basically want to give my users access to the internet to download POP mail if required but also allow authenticated users access to shares and printers on the LAN. Many thanks for any input!
  13. In the process of gathering XP drivers for a Portege 500 series laptop but I'm getting 1.4k (avg) download speed from their official site!!!!!!! This is the same every time I try to download a driver I'm using a 10 MB connection so I'm pretty sure its not my end thats slow. Would anyone know of a mirror that might be faster??? For a corporate services site, that really is appalling. LOL, just checked its now blasting away at 2.9KB Thanks for any replys.
  14. Thanks tain, I'll have a look.
  15. Thanks for the reply BJ! I've also tried feeding Sawmill the pcap file but it didnt like that either I can view them in the ethereal client but what I would like to do is create graphs that show which application or service is talking to what the most. Appreciate any input.
  16. Guess not then.
  17. small update, I've tried Sawmill but it does not read the .txt files I have. I guess this is not the native format for Ethereal logs.
  18. Thanks for looking in! Fairly new to all this and have been given the task of finding an application that can interpret the log files generated by ethereal. Lucky me yeah? I can open them in note pad but I doubt that that will be very useful as an analysis tool so does anyone know of another app? Thanks in advance
  19. I've replaced several towers for users in a remote site but one or two of them get a problem authenticating during the morning boot. Towers are XPsp2 on a 2003 AD domain. I've checked the event logs on one and see this: Your computer has automatically configured the ip address etc IP is in the 169.x.x.x range. I guess thats telling me it cant find a DHCP server (which is present and working well). Thanks for any comments.
  20. LOL 3 topics in a row and not a single reply????????? Must.... change...... deoderant
  21. Kind of doing this for the first time and can't find anything specific on the web. I can silently install my application with a simple batch file but I am not able to install the required registry information (or so it seems). My batch file is simply this: systemupdate302-2007-9-21.exe -s -a /s /v" /qn" and then I want the reg information to be installed. Is it as simple as adding the reg key details with a /s switch to the next line in the batch file?? Many thanks for any advice.
  22. Never mind. Seems to work better with the latest client.
  23. Thanks for looking in. I have IBM update retriever installed on a fully patched win2003 server. The application seems to work ok as it goes off and dowloads all the relevant updates for my current machines. The problem seems to be client-side and is as follows. Client starts and searches the network repository and finds updates. The updates download and install (apparently) but at the end, I get a 6 applications did not install message. If I then check the history (still in the clinet update app) it says the application did install. I tried this again on a freshly imaged M55 tower. I noticed two new updates were available from IBM so downloaded them and then ran the M55's client. I failed to pick up the new downloads. I'm a bit baffled as it seemed to work ok the first few times I tried it. Nothing has changed AFAIK. Anyone experienced this or can point me in the direction of a good forum that might have similar questions? Many thanks for any advice!
