  1. With a fully patched 98SE system, and I assume most members who frequent these two sub-forums will have a fully patched system with PNGFILT.DLL included, then .png files can be viewed in IE6 without any additions.

If you go to the PNG Gallery at http://www.r0k.us/graphics/pngLibrary.html and save some .png files to some location such as My Pictures folder. Then clicking on the .png files in that folder will open them in IE6 and they can be viewed without problem.

Check out in particular the Round Snakes  at rotsnake_cropped.png

    Edit: Reworded.

  2. Opera has never needed the Sun Java Runtime to be installed, it has its own Java support built in.

I think that has always been the case, at least back to version 7.

Reference to the Knowledge Base in Opera support gives a different view at

    http://www.opera.com/support/kb/view/375

From Opera 10.50 Build 3234 Opera is now using the Java Plug-in instead of native Java.

You weren't wrong for long Dave!  ;)

  3. Modicr, I've tried 3228 build of Opera 10.5.

It was possible to install it but it can't run (despite of help of KernelEx 4.5 beta 1).

As I've seen, officialy the oldest supported system is Win 2000 (similar to Firefox).

Build 3228  runs here OK without KernelEx on this 98SE2ME machine. I normally don't download Alpha builds, but I was intrigued by the fact Opera does seem close to a Beta release of 10.5. I took the precaution of installing it in a separate folder from Opera 10 so I could compare the two and it does load pages with a lot of content such as Flash and Javascript faster. But the real question is whether it runs any better for those users who have had a good deal of problems running previous releases.

Latest Build is 3236 by the way, they are coming thick and fast.

  4. If you want all the background to this and have a few, no I mean many, minutes to spend then read the post at

    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...78592&st=28

although really the complete thread needs to be read to put this post in context. I do not think LLXX published her fixes for the files in question.

I also have been using 4.10.2230 on both my 98SE and 98SE2ME boxes for the past three or four years without any problems.

  5. As of today February 1st 2010 Eset has removed all releases of  NOD32 V2.7 Anti Virus software from it's site completely. Virus Signature Database updates will cease on February 1st 2012.

    http://kb.eset.com/esetkb/index?page=content&id=SOLN2386

This has to have been one of the best AV applications ever designed for 98/ME systems, barely noticeable, even during updating and very configurable to your particular whims or needs.

  6.  ONGD - FREE - Mozilla Sunbird V.0.9 --- http://www.mozilla.org/projects/calendar/sunbird

While Gregory Braun's excellent fast and lightweight Calendar 2000 will suit most people, Mozilla Sunbird is a much more sophisticated calendar application that should suit the most stringent users.

It has a curious small bug when used on 98/ME systems whereby it will not print at the first attempt but will on the following attempts???

  7. I've been working on some web pages that detail how to use SSM free on 9X systems to enforce a comprehensive default-deny security policy sufficient to offset the lack of AV support. It's taking much longer to finish than I expected. Too much else to do and not enough time in a day.

    Rick

    Hi Rick,

    Any progress with this?

As a long time user of SSM Free I was particularly looking forward to this, in fact reading any of your posts on security has always been highly interesting and informative.

  8. If I understand correctly, SAS_v4.24.1004 can be updated manually if I

remove the ticks from Automatic Updates. In other words, the definitions

file will load on this 98 desktop, and that error box about the system being

too old was erroneous. Is that what you are saying, lightning slinger?

With V.4.24.1004 on 98SE before anything else go to Preferences, Updates tab and yes remove the checks under the heading "Automatic Updates". Yes ,it is badly worded terminology SAS has used here.

The check at "Automatically check for program and definition updates every 8hrs" is for SAS Pro only and not the free version. The important check to remove is that for "Check for program updates when the application starts". This will keep you on V.4.24.1004 and not automatically download the newest program version which will not run on 98SE.

Then you must update from within the program with the "Check for Updates" button on the opening GUI, this will download first the core definitions and secondly the trace defintions. Downloading from the Manual Installer does not work as you have found.

By the way addition of KernelEx will allow you to run the latest version of SAS Free which is alot less thirsty as regards CPU and RAM usage.

I don't think any malware infection is easy to deal with if not recognised straight away, I have just spent my spare time of the last three days removing 24 infections from a friends XP machine using a combination of around half a dozen apps from BitDefender Rescue Disc 2009 through Malwarebytes etc and the only app that would remove the last stubborn infected file was TrendMicro's HouseCall Online scanner of all things.

  9. I installed SAS_v4.24.1004 and manually downloaded the latest

definitions file. The definitions file will not load on a 98 system.

An error box appears letting you know that your system is too old.

I posted on the SAS forum about this. Big surprise, no replies.

If the defintions file won't load on a 98 system, all the links to

v4.24.1004 should be removed. What good is this older version

of the app, if the latest definitions file is incompatible with 98?

I see from the SAS Forum that on January 25th you were advised by the Site Admin to "update the definitions file from within the program". If you had followed that advice and removed the checks from Automatic Updates, which prevents program updates as mentioned by both the Site Admin and myself, you would have V.4.24.1004 fully working.

  10. I thought I could install SuperAntiSpyware as a substitute for Spybot. Right on

their website they list a version compatible with 98SE. Unfortunately, their

definition files won't load on a 98 system.

The last version of SAS Free that runs well on 98Se is V.4.24.1004 see

    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showto...5936&st=363

That version can be downloaded at

    http://www.filehippo.com/download_superantispyware/5052/

Before you download any definition updates, go to Preference and the Updates tab and remove both checks from the Automatic Updates!

Big problem with SAS nowadays is opening the program and running updates as it really does bog the system down even on mine with a 1.4Ghz CPU and 1GB RAM. On a lesser system it might just bog it down to the point were it just freezes the PC. Trying it right after a reboot may help.

The ESET or Symantec Online AV scanners in IE should not be too demanding on system resources.

  11. About the difference between Java 5 and 6: This panorama DOES word with Java 6 on WIN 98SE (version 4.10.2222), but NOT with Java 5 (even latest version 5.22) : http://www.maltacamp.at/en/the-campground/360-panorama.html

I discovered this this summer when I was looking for a camping in Austria. No clue why this is !

    Roger

All panorama functions work fine with version 1.5.0.22 on Opera 10.00 on your link on my 98SE2ME box.

I have, so far as I can remember, always had Enable Java unchecked in all my years of using Opera and have never come across the need to enable it.

There again I don't have problems with Opera.

  13. No I don't have a boot floppy disc.

You can download boot floppy disc for 98 from http://www.allbootdisks.com and after that go to http://support.microsoft.com/kb/221829 and follow the instructions contained on that page.

Edit: After a quick look at the eMachines website, I don't see drivers for the T2778 for Windows 98 listed. If not, the whole excersice may be pointless.

  14. ONGD - FREE - ieSpell V.2.5.1 http://www.iespell.com

Spell Checker for IE and other IE based browsers. Free for personal use. Should come in handy for those members still posting here with IE. (Strange that you can never find the spelling mistakes until after you hit the Add Reply submit button).

Alright it doesn't work in real-time like that in Opera 10 but works along the same lines as that in Microsoft Word 97 spell checker.

Edit: Works in IE7 and IE8 also if anyone double-boots with XP

  15. This software has been around for a while and being flagged by a-squared is possibly nothing more than another one of a-squared false positives as nobody else seems to flag it as malware, however it does not perform well according to reports, which is probably why it is not well known and see this youtube review of this software for some idea of it's capabilities.

You can download Update V.6.0.2 through to V.6.0.6 at the following page:

    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/pro...&product=10

Edit: As an afterthought, please read the System Requirements on each Update and be aware that each update must be installed after the proceeding version update only such as v.6.0.6 must require v.6.0.5 to be installed etc all the way down the line. So you need to collect all six downloads and install them in the correct sequence.

But read the following thread also about dencorso's no nag mod for V.6.0.6, it does work extremely well,

    http://www.msfn.org/board/index.php?showtopic=115784.html

No doubt some other members will tell you to use Foxit Reader instead of Adobe, if you do, use Version 2.2.2129.

  17. I would also like to pass on my best wishes to all who frequent this particular forum, especially the mods. dencorso for doing a fantastic job in keeping to it all together with good and sound advice, both technical and non-technical. MDGx for keeping us all going with fixes and updates etc, proving things are still looking bright for 9X, you were sorely missed during your absence.

To all those learned members, too many to mention, but I think we all know which I mean, in keeping us informed, corrected and at times thoroughly entertained all the way.  :hello:
