  1. I'm not sure how many of you are familiar with this function of WMP (version 9 and later, I think) unless you regularly play Chinese (Hong Kong) VCDs, which usually have two language tracks (usually Cantonese and Mandarin), on your computer. Anyhow, there's this function, when (1) you are playing a video file on full screen and you right click or (2) not on full screen, you go to the Play menu, and you choose Audio and Language Tracks, you'll find Audio Track 1 (both channels), Audio Track 2 (left channel), and Audio Track 3 (right channel). If you don't make a choice, both language tracks will play at the default setting (Audio Track 1), which means at the same time (one on each speaker), which can be really annoying and confusing. If you do make a choice, the language track that you've chosen will then play from both speakers (and the track not chosen will not be played). Well, I was using WMP 10 with no problems. I had all the codecs I needed and everything was fine. That was until I purchased an iriver clix and it was highly recommended that I used the latest version of WMP, which was (and still is) version 11, with my iriver clix. So I upgraded. After that, I was no longer able to choose my preferred language tracks when playing VCDs! The option simply did not exist anymore. When I went to Audio and Language Options, my only option was simply Audio Track 1. I tried to problem solve on the Microsoft website and supposedly, WMP 11 had the language track options. But for some strange reason, it wouldn't work for me. So I tried to roll back (is that the correct term?) to WMP 10, hoping that would solve my problem. Still, the options did not exist. And while I was playing a file, I was asked if I wanted to install WMP updates. I clicked yes, and it automatically installed WMP 11. I've tried uninstalling and reinstalling the codecs that I have, but I'm still not able to get that function to work!!! It's really annoying, because I have to revert to the primitive method of going to Play Control and moving the balance all the way to the left or all the way to the right. When I'm using regular speakers, it's still not half as bad, but when I'm using my headphones, it drives me crazy, because it makes me feel like I'm deaf in one ear and it gives me major headaches! This isn't the only problem I'm having with WMP 11. Maybe it's just my imagination, but my computer's running a lot slower after I've installed WMP 11. WMP itself loads pretty slowly. Audio and video files load much more slowly than before and all the other functions like rip and burn are slow too. And when I'm running WMP 11, all other programs become slow. All these I can still endure, but the language track problem is driving me nuts!!! Can somebody help me? By the way, if it makes any difference, my computer's running on Windows XP (Home, SP2), using AMD Sempron Processor 2600+ 1.6GHz, and has a 1GB DDR-SDRAM total memory.
  2. Thanks for all the responses. I thought it had something to do with the hard drive too! I just wanted to prove my boyfriend's brother wrong. And so that in the future if something like this happens again I'll know what to do. He hasn't done anything to the computer. And we're still speaking. Nothing was backed up, but thank goodness there was nothing much on the hard drive that couldn't be replaced. My boyfriend's brother got him a new hard drive. We don't have a Windows CD at the moment though. My boyfriend said the last person that re-installed the system for him never gave him back the CD!!! I've been bugging him for a very long time to get it back, but I guess he's a better procrastinator than I am a nagger!
  3. I should've posted this much earlier because now I don't have the laptop anymore and can't remember all the details. Anyhow, about a month or two ago, I was using my boyfriend's Gateway laptop (3-4 years old, don't have any other info on it at the moment) when it suddenly crashed. I was simply doing the regular things like checking my email. All of the sudden, the screen went blue and there was a screeching sound, and then this message came up: I've been actively using computers of all sorts since 1998 (I've even built a couple) and this had never happened to me before. I freaked out and thought my boyfriend was going to kill me. He was pretty nice about it though. He doesn't know much about computers, by the way. He said his computer was old and said that it'd probably died of "natural causes." The laptop was a mess (full of viruses and adwares) before I met him and I helped him "restore" it without having to reformat or reintall anything. I still felt really bad about crashing the computer.A few hours later, I tried to turn on the computer but nothing happened. I kept trying with no success. I kept trying day after day and sometimes the computer would manage to boot, but a short while later, it'd die again. Other times, I'd get an error message right away. There were three error message that kept showing up, one of which was the one I'd mentioned above. The other two were: and I tried to do a repair using the Windows XP (Professional) CD but it didn't work for some reason (can't remember what now) and I ended up reinstalling Windows. The laptop worked fine for a few days before the same problems came up again. I became preoccupied with other things (school, work, etc.) and left the computer alone for a few weeks. A few days ago, my boyfriend's brother came over and took the laptop, saying that he'd try to fix it. I know for a fact that he doesn't know much about computers either and I was wondering what he was going to do about it. He called my boyfriend not too long ago and said something that really upset me. He told my boyfriend that the reason his laptop wasn't working was because somebody did a "s**tty" job reinstalling Windows!!! He probably saw that third error message the first time he tried to boot the computer and started to jump to conclusions. HELP!
  4. I've uninstalled the program but that doesn't seem to help. I'm still having problems. edit: I did a quick repair using the Windows CD and the problem seems to have been fixed.
  5. I'm not sure if this is the cause of my problems, but I started having problems yesterday after I downloaded, installed, and used the trial version of Video Capture/Convert/Split/Merge/Burn Studio. I tried to combine two .avi files with the program and while that was going on, I tried to move some files from one folder to another. A window popped up with the error message: "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close." After I chose not to send the error report, the folders closed (the toolbar disappeared and reappeared). I once again attempted to open the folders to move some files and the same thing happened soon after. The second time, I decided not to bother sending the error report. I tried to open the folders once again and faced the same problems. At that time, I thought it was because I was running too many programs at the same time, so I just left things alone and waited until the program was done with combining the two .avi files. Earlier today, without any programs running, I tried to organize my folders again. As soon as I opened a folder, any folder, I got the same error message again. At first, it would be a few minutes before the error message popped up. As I tried again and again to reopen a folder so that I could view its content, the error message started to pop up earlier and earlier. Now, as soon as I open a folder, the error message would pop up. I wanted badly to watch a few video clips that I have on my hard drive, so I thought I'd just forget about opening a folder to click on the files and just open Windows Media Player and click "Open" to open a file that way. Well, that caused WMP to close as well!!! I deleted the newly combined file and emptied the recycle bin. The problem still persisted. I proceeded to run, ewido anti-spyware, Lavasoft Ad-Aware, Spybot Search & Destroy, and Norton Antivirus, but did not find any major problems (just the regular cookies here and there that were easily taken care of). The problem still persisted though. I then tried to do a System Restore (not sure if that'd help but I thought it was worth a try). There were two dates to choose from and I picked a random date. After the computer restarted, I got the following message from System Restore: "Restoration Incomplete. Your computer cannot be restored to: [date] [action] No changes have been made to your computer. To choose another restore point, restart System Restore." I did, and picked the other date that was available. Same results. Tried this over and over again. Same results. I'm not sure what other information I should provide that may help with the analysis. Please let me know. I'd really appreciate any help I could get! Thanks in advance.
  6. I'm not sure exactly what you meant by that. Well, they all found some problems (different problems) and have fixed those problems. Anyhow, guess what? I decided to try uninstalling Internet Explorer 7 and the system reverted to the previous version (6), and I'm not having the same problems with version 6. I wonder if the beta version (7) is problematic. It still works fine on my other computer though.

  8. I'm not sure exactly which category this falls under. I hope this is the right place to post it. A few days ago, I started having problems with web-based email services such as Yahoo, Hotmail, and Excite, as well as a few other non-email websites on one of my computers. With Yahoo, regardless of which folder I clicked on (or the "empty" option for junk and trash), I'd keep arriving at the inbox. And when I was at the inbox and tried to delete checked messages or report them as spam, it was as if I'd kept clicking on the refresh button - none of the messages could be deleted and I'd keep seeing the same thing over and over again. Whenever I tried to open any message in the inbox, I'd get the "Internet Explorer cannot display the webpage" error message. I could only see the email message after I’d refreshed the page. Any attempt to view the previous or next message would result in the same problem (and same “solution”). And whenever I tried to delete the message that I'd been viewing, I'd get the "There was a problem accessing your mailbox" error message. With Hotmail, the only folder I could access was also only the inbox. Deleting checked messages from the inbox sometimes worked and sometimes didn't. I couldn't open any messages at all - the page just kept refreshing whenever I clicked on any messages. With Excite (which my roommate uses and I don’t, so I don't know all the details), there’d been problems deleting selected messages from the inbox as well. My boyfriend was looking up phones and PDAs on the Cingular website a couple of days ago, and when he tried to click on a phone to see the details, the page just kept refreshing and bringing him back to the search results page. At first, I thought those websites were just having temporary problems due to maintenance, but the problems have persisted. The first thing I did was remove all temporary internet files and cookies. When that didn't work, I tried Norton SystemWorks (used all features that were relevant), without any success. Next, I tried running Norton Antivirus, Spybot Search & Destroy, Counterspy, Ewido Anti-Spyware, and Lavasoft’s Ad-Aware, but none of them fixed the problem. Spybot did find something (over and over again) that it wasn’t able to delete – Web-Nexus (file: wuaclt.dll). I tried deleting the file manually but kept getting an error message (I forgot what it said). I managed to delete it in safe mode and Spybot is no longer detecting this problem. But the problems with the email services and a few other websites persist. What should I do?! I ran HijackThis and if anyone cares to help me interpret the log file I'll post it. Thanks in advance!
  9. That option was not checked. Thanks though. Anyhow, I also went to another forum and they suggested CounterSpy (15-day trial version). That seemed to have solved the problem. It's weird how Spybot, Spyware Scanner, and CounterSpy all detected some of the same problems, but apparently the first two programs could not successfully/completely remove all the components. I'm just guessing, since they all detected the same thing but it was only after using the last one that the problem was solved. Too bad CounterSpy isn't free. jroc: Thanks for all that info, but in my original post, I mentioned: So the problem didn't really have anything to do with the registry. Thanks though. Problem fixed now.
  10. I've been having the same problem with my system32 folder popping up at startup. I've been using Norton AntiVirus, Spybot - Search & Destroy, and Free Spyware Scanner (all highly recommended at Download.com) for a long time and have not had this problem until recently. I've run these applications over and over again after this problem started, but have not come up with anything. I've been to the Microsoft Help & Support page for this specific problem and looked at my Registry, but have not found the "incorrect entries" that were described. I've also used a number of registry cleaners such as TweakNow RegCleaner and CCleaner (also highly recommended at Download.com) to try cleaning the registry, but the system32 folder is still popping up at startup. Finally, I've just tried using this program: http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits...stem32opens.vbs, but after I ran it, it said: I've been to other forums and websites and I've already done most of what they've suggested. Others suggest downloading a number of other spyware removers and/or registry cleaners to try to fix this problem, but how many of those applications do I need, really? I'm not sure what to do anymore. If anyone have any ideas, please share them with me! Thank you in advance.
