  1. Thanks a lot nuhi - I'll give that a try.
  2. The BIOS order is right. CD drive, then HDD. Normally you can do this and not have a CD in the drive - it'll just check and then proceed when it finds none. How do I flag my boot partition as bootable? Thanks for your help.
  3. Hi folks, I've been nLiting for years but the past couple of times with one machine in particular I seem to be making a mistake and removing something I shouldn't be. Essentially, I can't boot into Windows without having my nLited CD in the optical drive. If I try to boot in without it it asks me to 'PLEASE INSERT SYSTEM DISK AND PRESS ENTER'. This is usable. If I keep my nLited disk in at all times then things go as they should. But it's not optimal by any stretch. The big risk is that when someone boots up they'll accidentally press a button when prompted and reformat the disk. Does anyone have any idea which file it may be that I'm deleting that I shouldn't be? It's very frustrating, especially so because I don't really rip too many files out of my install in the first place. Thanks in advance. Ronaldo.
  4. A quick question - the title says it all: Will I be able to nLite XP 64 bit Edition? Or is it time for me to make the move to Vista (& vLite)? Thanks.
  5. I'm soon to be donating my 'old' computer to my family. My XP Pro SP2 licence will go with that computer. To replace the computer I'll be building something along the lines of this: Asus P5K Intel P35 Intel Core 2 Duo E6300 GeIL GX22GB6400UDC ECS 8600 GT Corsair HX 520W Now - I've been nLiting for ages. Love the program. Big ups nuhi! XP nLited does everything it needs to do for me. I essentially use my computer to listen to music, watch films, surf the Net, email, etc. The most taxing stuff I do is F@H, use ACID/SoundForge and play the odd game. My question is: Should I buy XP Pro SP2 again or should I make the switch to Vista (& if so which version)? The way I see it, the pros & cons of getting XP again are: PROS: Know it inside out - comfortable working around with it Slightly cheaper than Vista at this point nLite has been in development for a long time Lighter on resources than Vista Drivers are all there and stable I have all my apps for XP - don't know if these will work under Vista CONS: Not moving forward with technology I may be missing some functionality that's 'must have' No DX10 - I'm no big gamer by any stretch but I will have a DX10 capable GFX card I'll probably have to upgrade to Vista at some point anyway??? - Will I? Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
  6. Hiya, I've done many nLites before, generally without any problems. My family said they wanted an nLited system so I went and made them one. I used the LastSession .ini from my latest effort and (of course) changed the product key and some other fields. Everything is fine except to say that if I try and boot up the system it absolutely requires the nLited disc to be in the CD drive. This is despite the fact that I've made only the HD1 seek in the BIOS. I'm worried that the family will boot up and press a key (with the nLited disc in the tray) and start off the process of reformatting the hard disk. Anyone else run into this problem? Any way I can fix it (save going thru' the whole process again)? Thanks very much in advance. Ronaldo.
  7. Hey folks. I've done my 20th nLite just now and for some reason I seem to have gotten rid of the (very handy) 'Show Desktop' icon from the Quick Launch bar this time around. Does anyone know a way I can get it back. I don't really want to go through the whole process of re-installing if possible. Cheers.
  8. Hey strotee76, thanks for the reply. I can see where you're coming from and in the future I definitely will be leaving more stuff on the install disc. (Particularly with Vista's release, a couple more MBs on an XP disc looks like chicken feed.) This time around tho', I've been using the nLited disc for perhaps half a year, never dreaming of ever scanning anything and things were fine. It's just that now, half a year on, I need that functionality. In this way, testing on VMWare wouldn't have helped me out. Cheers anyway - I'm probably due for a reinstall besides. Ronaldo. PS: I'm still waiting on someone with news that you can reinstall TWAIN or WIA or whatever it is that I need but I doubt it will come.
  9. When I last slipstreamed using nLIte I removed scanner functionality thinking I wouldn't need it. Now I need to scan some photos. Now I need to reinstall WIA and/or TWAIN drivers I believe. Does anyone know how to do this? Cheers.
  10. Cheers Madhits45. Looks like it's back to Linux then. Pity. I quite like XP.
  11. Spending 15 minutes on the phone every month promising I'm not stealing something I've paid for isn't a stupid reason to make the switch back in my books. Now... can anyone answer my question?
  12. Hi, I've been using nLite for ages now. Love it! Great program. I'm a frequent reformatter. I have a legitimate OEM copy of Windows XP Pro SP2. This I have nLited. I recently re-installed Windows and then tried to activate it. It said I had to phone some number which I did. My copy of Windows is activated again but the woman on the phone said that I'd have to do this each time I re-installed Windows. Is this really the case? And why has it only happened now after so many years? If it is the case, then I'll be back on Linux straight away. Thanks. Ronaldo.
  13. Yeah, but my whole point gdogg is that I want this stuff on smaller boards, i.e. mATX. I, too, have a DFI (an Ultra-D) and they are the only way to go - agreed. In fact, I think that DFI would be the only company with the balls to release a board such as I suggested. I'm actually surprised they haven't already seeing as they cater very much to the LAN market. Smaller boards would surely be an attractive feature to LAN gamers. Can't wait for the Core 2 Duo DFI boards to land. Ronaldo.
  14. I'm looking for what I would classify as a satisfactory mATX motherboard. But I can't seem to find one, no matter how hard I try. So, I hereby propose a list of features that I'd like to see. Most people won't agree with my suggestions... but I think there's a growing market for mATX with the whole HTPC thing and I have no idea why chipset/mobo companies aren't putting more effort into this area. Big fat boxes are a thing of the past. Look at what happened with portable CD players - they started huge and worked their way down to the size of a CD itself. (I actually don't want a HTPC but just a small, good computer.) Obviously I don't understand the economics of this market - otherwise these things would have been done already. But I fail to see why people are asking for, and are satisfied with, outdated gear, yet don't want the latest and greatest. I also fully understand that I have no idea as to the practicality of these suggestions in terms of hardware compatibility/standards but what the heck? What I want mATX layout socket AM2 or 775 2 x DDR2 DIMMs 1 x GigE network adapter 8 x USB 2 x IEEE 1394 (b is possible but this is too forward thinking I fear) 8 x SATA II 1 x PCI-E 16x 2 x PCI 5 x fan headers switch to reset BIOS - no jumpers a passive heatsink on the chipset What I don't want onboard graphics onboard audio floppy port PATA ports serial port parallel port game port Say what? - 2 DIMMs only? - You must be mad. How many of you use all four slots? I never have. Still, I'd accept four slots, even though they never seem to work properly (i.e. 2 always seem to be the 'good' slots and 2 seem to be the 'bad' ones). - no floppy? - Come on people, we're no longer in the 1980s... or 90s... hell, we're over half-way thru the naughties and this blight is still on 'high-end' motherboards. Why? The loss would cause some non-GUI ultra-geeks a few tearful days, or perhaps months, but the time has come. We've had CD, DVD, USB and we're now up to HD-DVD and the floppy still reigns supreme. If you really need one for your 1337 practices pick up a USB version. How many nanoseconds of HD content would 1.44MB hold anyway? - no parallel/serial/game ports? - I don't even know what these things do! (I do really but even in their heyday I never used them.) Again, USB is the way forward. - no audio? - OK, I'll make a concession here and allow it if it's 192/24. I personally use an M-Audio firewire box and it eats up onboard solutions. But this won't suit everyone of course. So perhaps we can have some decent onboard audio. - no graphics? - Again, I'll make a concession but only if I get onboard RAM too. What's the PCI-E 16x there for if you have onboard graphics? - no PATA - I realize there's a dearth of SATA optical devices (why?) but take away the ports and the devices will come, that you can be sure of. Obviously these things will never happen - I suspect we'll still have the floppy in 2020. But it's what I'd like to see. I'm sure there are others out there who would feel the same way. This would be a highly 'specialized' board in a sense and as such would have a limited market. On the other hand, taking off all this useless junk would surely save some money. And it's true what they say: Sometimes less is more. Pedro. PS: Modular PSUs too please.
  15. That's what I'm worried about. Will they block the slots? Thanks for all your help by the way.
  16. XP-90? Probably a good idea. I just like the way the XP-120 cools the RAM quit well on my current board. I also like 120mm fans in general due to their lower noise. I also like having a really cool CPU. I like the look of the Zalman CNPS8000 low profile cooler but am worried that it will block RAM slots. Any ideas if it will? I've checked the specs from both Zalman and Asus but am still in the dark. Thanks again for all your help puntoMX.
  17. I'd use a Enermax Liberty 400 WT modular power supply. Do you think this would fit? I'm a little worried that there wouldn't be enough room for the fan to push air. That is, it may be a bit cramped to take air from. It's a very good cooler tho'.
  18. How about if I were to put a ThermalRight SI-120 or SI-128 on there with a Papst 120mm fan? Do you think that would fit in a Silverstone Temjin TJ08 case? The case appears to be only a little more narrow than most cases which makes me think that it will fit. And I think that then I will have no RAM clearance problems. I also like the idea of 120mm fans that cool the board too. Cheers once again. Ronaldo.
  19. Yes puntoMX you have helped a lot. Thanks! I'll download the manual to see which RAM is compatible. I'm surprised that the Zalman cooler won't block any RAM slots though. Thanks very much for your help.
  20. Hi, I'm just about to build myself a mATX system. I'm sick of these big, bulky boxes! I'll probably be using an Asus M2NPV-VM or a Gigabyte GA-M51GM-S2G motherboard. These are both socket AM2. I'll only be plugging an Athlon 64 3200+ in. This has an operating frequency of 2.0GHz. I have no intention of overclocking or anything like that. I'll only be using the system to word process, surf the web, play MP3s, encode the odd DVD and I won't be doing any gaming at all. I'll be using the onboard graphics in the first instance - I may plug in a GFX card later. I plan on using a Zalman CNPS8000 CPU cooler. What I want to know is this: A - I've heard some dodgy reports about the Asus board. Has anyone on here had any good experiences with this board? B - If I use Corsair TWIN2X1024-5400C4 RAM (which operates at 4-4-4-12 timings) will I be able to underclock this to DDR2-4300 and operate it at 3-3-3-8 timings? C - Will I notice a difference between operating at 5400 and 4300 speeds? That is, does an Athlon 64 3200+ need all that bandwidth? D - Will I notice a difference between the 4-4-4-12 and 3-3-3-8 timings? E - Is 1 GB of RAM sufficient if some of this will be going to the onboard graphics? F - Will any RAM slots be blocked by the Zalman cooler. I've checked both the Asus and Zalman sites but I'm still in the dark. What I need is first-hand experience from someone who's used this set-up. Thanks. Ronaldo.
  21. Hi, Do you think they'll be a cheaper option of buying Vista if I already own a copy of Windows XP, i.e. will there be an upgrade option? Or will I have to buy Vista at full-cost? Thanks.
  22. OK, thanks guys. Could you explain something more about this ghost business? How is done? Can you point me in the direction of some info? What software do I need for it? Any open source stuff is preferable. Thanks for your rapid replies. Cheers.
  23. Hi, Was wondering if anyone could tell me if nLiting my XP in any way invalidates it. I like to reformat every two months or so to keep things fresh. I also like to keep up to date with hotfixes, etc. Does anyone have any ideas on this? Cheers.
