  1. The last time I found a suitable 64-bit program for that, which I uninstalled because I hated it.. NOT a wise move, I know. Maybe I'll run a check and report back..
  2. We played by the microsoft book at my uni: http://office.microsoft.com/en-au/assistan...1401931033.aspx We did all that, and also patched the office from the server, worked like a charm - except for those who didn't set their Share/security rights properly.
  3. The way I see it, NO BROWSER is safe.. unless the user knows what he/she is doing. Then again, I think most people here do..
  4. I'm afraid i can't provide lots of technical info because of my little use of NT, but from what I've learned, NT 4.0 still goes more or less strong because of 3 rules: 1) If it's not broken, don't fix it 2) If it's newer, it'll cost more 3) If you change something, you can never be 100% sure what will happen. In other words, NT 4.0 is tested many times, and many an admin has gained skills and experience using it, and know the tricks of their trade. Also, if a piece of hardware, let's say a aerver machine in a small business is known to work well with 4.0, many admins rather use that than install newer os's, because you can never be sure if compatibility errors and whatnot occur. This I have gathered from here and there, mostly from old and newer admins, please remember I'm just a student so if i'm horribly wrong, don't execute me. As for myself, I installed win 2k3 server on my old pentium 3- based hardware, and it has no problems working at all, even a (very small, mind you) MySQL database worked on it smoothly, and it does not have a lot of memory. Also, it's a nice treat to have Active directory in-built in the os. Hope I helped at least a little bit.
  5. Trillian I've tried, and really didn't like. I think it was a few versions back, though, so maybe I'll give it another go. Thanks for the idea! I just noticed another delay thingy when opening this.. When I right-click a link on IE and select open in new window, it loads for some noticable time... could this be because Ff is my default browser. This may not be related to the orig. problem of mine, and might be discussed here earlier, but I just noticed it as well and don't have the time to browse the forums now to check..
  6. Hi all, I have encountered an annoying problem with the 64-bit windows. I'm not sure what causes the problem, and I will be troubleshooting it myself soon, but I thought I'd ask for any insight and also provide a sort of a heads-up. So, I seem to be running into problems with copying/pasting from time to time. Theres a 15-25 seconds delay between ctrl+c and ctrl+v between 2 softwares sometimes, and in worst cases this has hung up the system. It doesn't seem to matter if the softwares are 32 or 64-bit, the delay is still there. And it prevents the program the clip is pasted to from responding for the delay time. At first, this occured between Windows live messenger (32) and Firefox (32), and I thought it was related to these programs, and didn't pay much attention to it, since I can always use IE, if I HAVE to. but then it started happening with Messenger and MS word.. and then even with messenger and notepad as I tested. I have NO IDEA what caused it, since after restart copying/pasting between these programs worked again.. copy/paste between IE and Ff works smooth as cream, too. Now as I tested, if I copy a link from Ff's address bar to IE's and from there to Messenger, it all fares smoothly. Also, sometimes copy/pasting between Messenger and firexof succeeds without dealy, usually after 3 delayed attempts. So is this just an issue with Firefox and messenger, as I first expected it to be, or is there something else behind it?
  7. I usually skip these introductory threads, but I suppose it's time I learned some manners (and got a hold of posting on this board), so: I'm Sarcasmatron, hail from Finland and I'm studying computer geeketry at a lower university level. I run and maintain (as a hobby): Windows XP 64-bit on AMD athlon 64 3500+ , 1Gb RAM, 250Gb Sata Hdd, nforce410 chipset Windows server 2003 on hardware so old it should be dead (go w2k server, go!) as a fileserver and an AD server (you gotta learn somewhere) these are connected via LAN onto which my flatmate has (his win XP) also connected to. And I joined here so I can ask silly questions from more seasoned veterans, and maybe provide answers to some things I know myself... anyways, onto posting silly questions.
