PeToUSB error.. trying to build USB stick XP installer

Ive been following these instructions:

I am having trouble formatring my usb stick... I follow the process using PeToUSB, but get an error on 100% saying:

FormatEx Error[11] An error ocurred formatting the drive

One thing I am thinking is that the drive is a Corsair Voyager GT 8gb, and I dont know if the fact it is 8gb is the problem.

Which brings me to another question...

Can you partition a usb stick..??

I have a 4gb stick which formatted ok... maybe I could create a 4gb partition on the 8gb stick, is this possible? Ive looked about but cant find aything that would let me do this...

Not to contradict you, but PeToUSB.exe is limited to FAT16 filesystem, and it cannot format above 2 Gb.

It is LESS than 2GB. (It wont format FAT16 > 2Gb)

However, the page you referred to simply republished (without the decency of even mentioning msfn.org or the various authors/contributors to the method) the contents of this thread, adding some instructions and screenshots:

Where you could ask your questions and expose problems you found, and where you could learn how to use the Hitachi Microdrive Filter or dummydisk.sys, as an alternate way of formatting/using USB sticks)

And yes, USB sticks CAN be partitioned, but what PeTOUSB exe does is not actually partitioning, it writes a MBR to it and creates just one big partition. (up to the capacity of the FAT16 filesystem)

The HP USB utility, see FAQ #4 here, should be able to format bigger partitions, as it can use both FAT32 and NTFS (NOT recommended in Flash memory):

In Windows 2000 and Above or anything with the NT5 structure, FAT 16 Supports 4GB, RESEARCH BEFORE YOU ADVISE PEOPLE, I HAVE A FAT16 on a Corsair 4GB USB Drive!!!! Sure , if you want a non-standard 64 kbyte cluster, with which a lot of systems/apps may have problems and with definitely an abominously amount of slack space, you're welcome to use 4 Gbyte FAT16:

As you might have realized if you actually had read it, in my post I simply cited the original app page, that states the peTousb.exe cannot format FAT16 partitions bigger than 2 Gb, NOT at all that it is impossible to create FAT16 partitions up to 4 Gb (with the limits above mentioned).

PEtoUSB v3.0.0.7 and 3.0.0.8_GERMAN at official link is outdated and doesn't support flash drives over 4 GB.

Here fixed (supports 8 GB and over drives) PEtoUSB may be downloaded:

But it formats in NTFS.
