Windows Update fails in x64

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

nLited Windows XP pro x64 sp2 with IE7 integrated.

Clicking on the Windows Update icon silently fails, to get it to work I have to change the properties of the icon from [%SystemRoot%\system32\wupdmgr.exe] to ["%ProgramFiles(x86)%\Internet Explorer\IEXPLORE.EXE" update.microsoft.com]

Also I'm not sure if this is a bug or a design choice, but in the Unattended setup section, if no user account is highlighted on the users tab then on the Owner & Net ID tab the organization box is greyed out.

Good catch on the Owner disabling, it's a leftover from when that textbox was on the same page.

About WU...gonna check if I can automate it.

Thx.

Glad to hear you're on the case, but just to prove no good deed goes unpunished, I'd like to suggest an additional tweak.

Security: Disable auto-insert notification on all CD-ROM drives

Text description: This will prevent the system recognising that a new CD has been inserted. While you will have to navigate to the CD manually, it will stop autorun malware being installed (Sony's rootkit anyone?).

Registry key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Cdrom]

"AutoRun"=dword:00000000

normally "AutoRun"=dword:00000001

Thanks but that disables drive refresh, it's enough to Disable Autorun, tweak is already inside.
