johngie Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I have a Win98 (first edition) laptop networked to a WinXP desktop. I want to back up the laptop over the network to an external drive connected to the desktop; that's set up for sharing and the laptop can see that drive OK.I've installed the Win98 backup applet. When I try to start the backup the only format it allows me to choose is QIC and it wants to format the media as a QIC tape. (That's even when I choose 'file' as the backup). This is quite different from the WinNT backup I use on the WinXP desktop. Is there a way round this? If not, can anyone recommend a third party backup solution for backing up to disk? It must be able to do differential backups.Regards
PROBLEMCHYLD Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 I used the backup tool from W95-11D.ZIP @ MDGx site. Its small, free, and its fast.Check out his site you get more than u bargain 4.
MDGx Posted May 22, 2006 Posted May 22, 2006 BACKUP9X.BAT + BAK9X.BAT [from W95-11D.EXE] are quite primitive tools, no incremental/differential backups [if those are the ones you were referring to], but the best in the business are listed here [all free(ware)]:http://www.mdgx.com/secrets.htm#FDPTScroll down to HDClone, SyncBack, WinBackup, Backup4All, Cobian Backup, Image Maker etc.HTH

I've gone with WinBackup. Once I've got used to it I'll ditch Microsoft Backup completely.Johngie
Hu$tle Posted July 11, 2006 Posted July 11, 2006 (edited) @ MDGx you have great back up tools because they back up everythingbut do you think your back up process can compress to a microsoft cab file to reserve spacebecause i double the size of my hard drive with your back up tool. And my hard drive is small.ThanksSomething like LZX maximum compression into CAB formatis what i had in mindI would like to Backup my whole system but be ableto reserve much space as possible with BACKUP9X.BAT/RESTOR9X.BAT Edited July 11, 2006 by Hu$tle

Win98 needs you guys
