Steven W
Updated 07/12/2007This is no longer working...Both the IN2TV website and VH1's site have now switched to FLV videos. MDGX you may wish to remove this from: http://www.mdgx.com/98mp10/98mp10.php. I will leave the original post here as it may offer some clues for someone to get sites working that "require" newer versions of WMP or Windows._____________________________________________________________________________________________Original post:Hey all I got AOL's In2TV working on a Win98 PC and figured someone else might be interested. I want to emphasize this isn't just for In2tv, I have watched free videos from cinemanow.com. This should work with many sites that require XP and WMP10 for media. I wouldn't be surpised if a few subscriptions services could be made to work. I would strongly reccomend testing them first! Here's all the steps that I took (Please read carefully I won't be responsible for damage):1. Install WMP 9.0 and reboot.2. Install windowsmedia9-kb891122-x86-intl.exe, WindowsMedia9-KB917734-Win9x-x86-ENU.exe, and WM9Codecs9x.exe and reboot.3. Change IE's user agent. Check this page http://www.winguides.com/registry/display.php/799/Use MSIE 6.0 and Windows NT 5.1; SV1 (instead of what it says). I exported this from the registry and wrote another .reg file that removes this info so I can switch between 98 and XP at will. If you leave it XP be aware windowsupdate no longer works correctly.4. Go to this page (requires adobe flash 8 or 9) http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/inxs/videos.jhtml, scroll down and watch the "Pretty Vegas" video, this should ask you to update your DRM components. Answer "OK". 5. Download XN resource editor http://www.wilsonc.demon.co.uk/d10resourceeditor.htm6. Open XN resource editor and change the version number of these files, wmplayer.exe, wmp.dll, and wmploc.dll to version 10.00.00.3802 you must do this in 4 "places" in the file, use double and single zeros as the original. 7. Click Start -- Run, type "C:\Windows\INF\UNREGMP2 /UpdateWMP" without quotes and press EnterI hope someone with more skills will package this. I really like the idea of a simple IE user agent switcher!SW Edited July 13, 2007 by Steven W
Steven W
I am attaching some screenshots to show this in action and to better explain part of the "installation".Here it is in action (watching Pinky and the Brain at AOL's in2TV)Here's what you should see in regedit when done with step 3.Here I am editing (changing version numbers of) wmp.dll using XN Resource Editor (Part of step 6 above) Edited October 21, 2006 by Steven W
oscardog
I have not had the opportunity to use your info provided, but feel I must comment on your industriousness, very well done
Steven W
Thank you. I must admit, figuring out the DRM update was necessary was a just a coincidence. I just happen to be an INXS fan (hence the link to the video in the directions). One more bit of good news mdgx's 98semp10 can be installed after this, upgrading more components. Steven W
Having a minor issue with AOL's in2tv site:If you follow the directions above and visit AOL's in2tvhttp://television.aol.com/in2tv, you can watch any of the shows by scrolling down and picking individual shows from the list of all shows. If , however, you choose one of the links near the top of the page, for example LOL TV, or Vintage TV:http://television.aol.com/in2tv/lol_tvhttp://television.aol.com/in2tv/vintage_tvYou will get a message saying you need to upgrade to XP. Can someone tell me how, after changing IE's user agent they are detecting Win98? You can go to one of the above pages and click "Stop" before it loads and the page's source. The only things I can find that try to detect browser and OS version are:http://cdn.channel.aol.com/_media/channels/sniff.jsandhttp://nsvapp-prod-rr.stream.aol.com/fugu-wrapperI am probably missing something else! Any help would be deeply appreciated.
Petr
Maybe you can try to monitor all http transactions by Proxomitron http://www.proxomitron.info/files/index.htmlIn the log windows you will see all requests and responses.Or maybe monitor all networ traffic by Ethereal: http://www.ethereal.com/download.htmlPetr
MDGx
I have tried your AOL in2tv guide. All steps work ok, except it won't allow me to update the DRM file from:http://www.vh1.com/artists/az/inxs/videos.jhtmlor anywhere else.Without this DRM update, I can't play any videos.I've tried this on my tweaked 98SE + IE 6.0 SP1 + WMP9 + 982XP + 98SEMP10 system.I've also tried this on a "virgin" [from scratch] 98 SE and then followed your steps. No go. I'll research some more to find a way to update DRM.
Steven W
@mdgxDid you update blackbox.dll to the version included in WMP10?If you did I think that may be the problem, if you notice in my directions I don't update that, at least not until after getting "individualized". Steven W
Microsoft has a site to perform individualization:http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/ind.../en/indivit.aspI would suggest using IE. Steven W
I just wiped WMP (including the DRM folder and reinstalled). I am going to modify my directions slightly. I got the DRM upgrade before applying any of the files from 98se2XP or 98seMP10. All I had for WMP was official MS WMP9 and upgrades.Obviously it works for me:In between installing MP7 and MP9 I install Windows Media encoder 7.1, that shouldn't matter should it? MDGx
@mdgxDid you update blackbox.dll to the version included in WMP10?If you did I think that may be the problem, if you notice in my directions I don't update that, at least not until after getting "individualized".Thanks.I'll try again using blackbox.dll from WMP9.The M$ DRM upgrade page doesn't work for me, actually never has [now without the upgrades from your guide]:http://services.wmdrm.windowsmedia.com/ind.../en/indivit.aspI'll have to restore the "virgin" 98SE install, and go from there [again].I'll let you know how it goes.Thanks. Steven W
I am changing this one last time, I noticed that you can do this without installing anything unofficial.Cryptnet.dll doesn't misbehave when keeping all the original files. This simplifies things considerably too.AOL recently changed the in2tv website in order to view shows using the method described above you have to choose it from "Shows" on the menu near the top of the page: Edited October 20, 2006 by Steven W
