Windows Xp Setup Tips N Tricks

Recommended Posts

Well, if you forgot your XP password and don't have a password reset disk made with Windows XP, you can download a little utility called the Offline NT Password and Registry Editor. It runs off a floppy, and is basically a Linux kernel that edits your SAM security file. Blanking the password with this utility is recommended and works better. Your chances of corrupting your SAM file when resetting it to a different password are HIGH, so blank it instead!

Here is the link, which I found on TechTV's site and have recommended to my system administrators at school:

You can also use this from a CD!

Well.. When I install TweakUI 2.10 I don't create a shortcut for it in the start menu by copying a shortcut to it. Instead I merge the registry info below and it adds TweakUI to the Control Panel, where I think it should be.

Reg File------------------

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}]

@="Tweak UI"

"InfoTip"="Starts the Tweak UI program which customizes advanced options in Windows"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\DefaultIcon]

@="%SystemRoot%\\\\System32\\\\tweakui.exe,0"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\Shell]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\Shell\Open]

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\Shell\Open\command]

@="tweakui.exe"

[HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT\CLSID\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}\ShellFolder]

"Attributes"=dword:00000030

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\ControlPanel\NameSpace\{D14ED2E1-C75B-443c-BD7C-FC03B2F08C17}]

@="Add Tweak UI to Control Panel"

End of File-----------------------------

That's cool, I'm using that in my file now. Thanks
