traversing folders

Recommended Posts

greetings...

I would like to know if there is a way to make users see only the folders that they are supposed to see in Windows 2003.

Example:

\Folder1

|--\Sub-Folder1

|--\Sub-Folder2

Just to explain, in Novell, if users are granted access to Sub-Folder1, users will only see that folder in Windows Explorer and they won't even know that Sub-Folder2 exist.

In Windows 2003, say Folder1 is mapped as drive X:, users see both Sub-Folder1 and Sub-Folder2. They see Sub-Folder2 eventhough they don't have access to it, of course when they double-click that folder, they get an "Access Denied" error.

Is there a tool or a setting somewhere where we could prevent users from seeing the folders that they don't have access to in Windows 2003? When they mapped drive X (Folder1) they should only see Sub-Folder1 and not Sub-Folder2.

Thank you in advance.

Yes - it's called "Access Based Enumeration", or ABE. Note that if you have a high volume of users that access the server, it will bring the server to it's knees by chewing up all CPU cycles :).
