Problem with SATA/RAID

Recommended Posts

Posted

I've been using nlite since version 0.9 and it has made my job easier. But when SATA harddisks started to show up, things got a little tricky. In some motherboards, I successfully integrated the textmode SATA/RAID driver and the installation went fine. In some, I failed miserably (problem with the windows setup unable to copy the file viamraid.sys despite it detected the hard drive). I've been digging around MSFN forum and, though there are many other having the similar problem but the solutions provided there doesn't solve my problem. So I decided to run an experiment and post my problem here hopefully someone can help.

The hardware & software:

- MSI K8M Neo-V (VIA K8M800 8237 chipset) motherboard

- Windows Xp Home SP2

- nlite 1.3

The Experiment:

1) Using the original Windows XP Home SP2 CD

* This requires pressing of F6 at the start of installation and inserting the VIA SATA RAID driver floppy disk.

* The installation went FINE.

2) using nlite: xp Home SP2 + RyanVM Updatepack 2.1.9 + RyanVM WMP10 addon

* This also requires pressing F6 & the floppy disk.

* This also went FINE.

3) using nlite: with the result of 2) + other program addons + unattended + options + tweaks

* This requires pressing F6 & the floppy disk.

* Here's the problem: after formatting the HD, it tries to copy the files (viamraid.sys, etc.) from the floppy and fails.

In 3), I purposely left out the driver integration and left all components untouched, so to maintain the state almost similar to that of 2) in which the beginning of the installation should behave fine. But why it doesn't work? Is there anything I've done in unattended/options/tweaks affected the setup reading the drivers from the floppy?

Please help.

The problem is the combination of "Unattended Install" with the F6/floppy textmode driver installation method. Windows Setup doesn't find the floppy drivers, if you do an unattended install without intagrating the textmode drivers.

Solution: Either don't use the unattended install option or integrate the VIA SataRaid drivers by using nLite. In the latter case don't hit F6 during XP Setup!
