XP won't boot without original mouse and keyboard

I just bought a Microsoft 700 wireless mouse and keyboard. My XP/Home system hangs on boot unless the original mouse and keyboard are plugged into the machine. What can I do so that I don't need the old hardware plugged in? Thanks to one and all Jimc

Enable "legacy USB" in Bios and check the "halt on error" section if applicable.

Does it stop in XP or before Windows even starts.
