loulou Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 Hello all,I am trying to install XP Pro on a new motherboard (Asus P5B-VM) w/Intel P4 3.4 CPU. I used RyanVM's Integrator and nLite to create an install CD that includes SP2, some critical updates, and the Asus drivers.Everything seems fine until the 35-minute mark, when the install process is Installing Devices. It gets about halfway through and then the monitor goes dark and everything shuts down except the power and the CPU fan. I've left it in this state for as long as an hour, and it doesn't restart. If I manually reboot, the installation restarts but then shuts off again at the same point.Same behavior occurs when I try installing with the original XP install CD.Interestingly, with Windows 2000, the installation process hangs at the same point, but the monitor stays on, and after 5-10 minutes of runnint some sequence over and over, the process resumes and the installation completes successfully.BTW, the same CDs will install XP Pro and Win2k on my old motherboard and on VirtualPC without this behavior. I checked the logs, and setuperr.log is empty. The last log written to is setupapi.log. Here are the last 20+ lines:#I123 Doing full install of "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_X86_FAMILY_15_MODEL_4\_1".#I121 Device install of "ACPI\GENUINEINTEL_-_X86_FAMILY_15_MODEL_4\_1" finished successfully.[2007/04/07 12:57:46 300.1044 Driver Install]#-019 Searching for hardware ID(s): acpi\genuineintel_-_x86_family_15_model_4,*genuineintel_-_x86_family_15_model_4,acpi\genuineintel_-_x86_family_15,*genuineintel_-_x86_family_15,acpi\genuineintel_-_x86,*genuineintel_-_x86#-018 Searching for compatible ID(s): acpi\processor#-199 Executing "E:\WINDOWS\system32\setup.exe" with command line: setup -newsetup#I022 Found "ACPI\Processor" in E:\WINDOWS\inf\cpu.inf; Device: "Processor"; Driver: "Processor"; Provider: "Microsoft"; Mfg: "(Standard processor types)"; Section name: "Processor_Inst".#I023 Actual install section: [Processor_Inst.NT]. IcemanND Posted April 8, 2007 Posted April 8, 2007 do you have the system overclocked? Try reducing the system to a minimum state and installing windows, just have the minimum components needed to have a basic system running installed/enabled and see if you can get farther. Also reset the BIOS to defaults.
loulou Posted April 8, 2007 Author Posted April 8, 2007 I was already down to minimal components and with no overclocking. However, I had changed some bios settings relating to my sata drive. So I followed your suggestion and reset the bios to defaults and gave it another try. This time, XP breezed through the Installing Devices section and completed the installation without incident!I feel a bit foolish - not thinking of this myself. What a great thing it is -- having access to people with more experience and a fresh perspective. You saved me a lot of time and trouble.
marrrteen Posted April 14, 2007 Posted April 14, 2007 "However, I had changed some bios settings relating to my sata drive. "Which BOIS setting did you change, and what did you change them to?I believe I have the same problem.New ASUS mobo, sata drives, and then XP just dies around the "30 Minutes Left" mark. (though i did get as far as 19 minutes on one attempt)Thanks,Craig
RJARRRPCGP Posted April 16, 2007 Posted April 16, 2007 Did it ever give you this BSOD:***Hardware malfunction. Please contact technical support.***(or similar)If you did, please check the jumpers on your motherboard, if the motherboard has jumpers for onboard devices. Then check the jumpers for PCI cards that have them, if any does.
marrrteen Posted April 18, 2007 Posted April 18, 2007 Turns out that I had the RAM installed in the wrong order. The Asus book's diagram was kinda ambigious about how to put the cards in. On my mobo I have 4 slots - a1 (yellow), b1 (brown), a2(yellow), b2(brown). I got everything to finally work once I put them in the A1/A2 slots, FYI.Good luck to anyone else stumbling upon this thread!
