Indent Moving When I Press Tab

I suddenly have the problem that the Left & Right indent markers are moving when I press tab, instead of just the text. Any ideas why? Thank you.

Not sure what version of Word you are using, but in Word 2000 there's an option under Tools | Options | Edit tab that might cause this behaviour. The option is Tabs and backspace set left indent. Could this have got set somehow?
