Hosea Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 I'm attempting to upgrade from win98 to winxp os. during install explorer.exe couldn't be copied from install cd. no other problems occurred,,after completion and login, loading of settings, a blue screen appeared with pointer and no icons,,,typed cntrl-alt-dlt and task manager appeared,,,so system is functioning and not frozen or crashed,,, loaded recovery console from cd to expand explorer.ex_ file but access was denied,,I think because of the "R" attribute. How can I get to a successful install and icons w/taskbar to appear?
Skyfrog Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 Installing XP over 98 or ME is always a bad idea in my opinion. They are totally different architectures, and the existing programs and drivers from 98 can cause all sorts of problems in XP. I highly recommend formatting your drive and doing a clean install (after backing any files you wish to save of course). You might want to check your CD also, and make sure there are no scratches or fingerprints on it.
Aaron Posted September 22, 2003 Posted September 22, 2003 access denied? OK, start up normally and get to the task manager and go to File > New Task and type cmd.exeBrowse to your XP CD in command prompt and extract explorer.ex_ and copy it to your windows directory, then restart.I'd recommend doing a full clean install though.
