Toolbar buttons become gray as soon as I start typing

OK, this happens to my friend and not me, so finding anything out might take a few minutes.

The way I understand it, when he beings typing in Microsoft Word (Office 2003), the toolbar buttons become gray, and do not allow to save, change font, or anything of that sort. There is a screenshot provided.

I tried googling for a good 15 minutes but with no luck. Please help.

Suspect it's not a legal copy or it hasn't been activated so it went into reduced functionality mode.

Just a guess.
