i've tried both reschange.exe and 1365VidChng.exe and neither can change the res of a particular machine

reschange actually gives me a reason, which is that the res isn't supported but that i could try the -force switch

well when i try -force it just tells me straight that its not supported

but i know the res is supported because not only is it the native res of the display but windows display properties lets me change it to that manually

any way to get this working?

EDIT: i was assuming that the refresh rate should be 60, i checked while the res was at 1280x800 and it is actually 61, all sorted now

I've had this problem in the past. I believe you have to install the manufacturer's drivers for the video card before attempting to use one of those tools. That solved my problem. :)
