Hamins Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 Hi,I installed Windows 2003 Std. Edition (Box Packed) on one of my client's server sometime in June. The server does not act as a Domain Controller, but is used as a web-server for an ERP application. So far, I've been administering the server using Remote Desktop (mstsc.exe). However, when I tried connecting to the server yesterday using MSTSC.exe, it gave me an error message that said "The remote session was disconnected because there are no Terminal Server license servers available to provide a license. Please contact the server administrator"I guess this is a Terminal Server license issue. However, what if I just want to manage my server remotely using REMOTE DESKTOP, and not use it as a proper Terminal server ? Do I still need a TERMINAL SERVER CAL? If not, how do I connect to the server using Remote Desktop, without getting the above error message ?
CoffeeFiend Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 If you use it in terminal server mode, you need CALs, but there is a grace period (which seemingly just ended). Otherwise, you don't need CALs to just administer it (but simultaneous connections are limited).Under Terminal Services Configuration (in administrative tools), go under server settings, licensing, then pick "Remote Desktop for Administration". You're done.
allen2 Posted October 31, 2006 Posted October 31, 2006 With 2003, you must uninstall from add/remove windows components the component terminal server and then check the checkbox allow remote desktop user on computer properties. The method described by Crahak should work only with 2000.
Hamins Posted November 2, 2006 Author Posted November 2, 2006 Thanks, Crahak/allen2. I try it out ...
