Switching identity problem

I am using Windows XP home edition.

If one user switches identity so he is still logged on, the second user can use his account quite happily. When that second user logs off, the computer remains in sleep mode and cannot be brought to life again. The only way to recover it is to switch it off and reboot, and lose any unsaved data from the first user.

How can I get over this glitch?

I would appreciate any help.
