Customer of ours has a Windows Small Business Server 2003 in the UK. The backup runs each night at approx 2AM.

The problem is that they have a few members of staff in other countries who are trying to use their e-mail during the time the server is backing up. They are reporting that they can't access it during this time.

Do we need to implement Shadow Backup or something like that?

Would be great if someone could point me in the direction of a solution.

Thanks

you need to run the backup using shadow copy, during the backup the mailbox DB is unavailable if shadow copy is not used, and if you are doing a full backup nightly (which you should be if the DB allows for it) then people will not be able to use mail until the DB is finish being backed up, check your backup and make sure it is using VSS,

Thanks,

If you could provide some detailed instructions on how to implement that would be great! (or point me in the direction that I can get some).

I have been into My Computer - right clicked C: and created a shadow copy, went into the Backup program but can't seem to find anywhere in there that will let me backup using VSS.

Thanks

You might want to have a look at this article on the Exchange blog:

http://msexchangeteam.com/archive/2004/06/21/161564.aspx

"The need for backup is directly proportional to the amount of grief that you would have if your data (in this case - Exchange databases and transaction logs) disappeared today."

LOL,

Oh that is one good article, nice find cluberti. :) you know where all the good stuff is

Thanks - the Exchange blog is a must for everyone who deals with Exchange. They explain things very well, and they're not boring reads either :).
