XP boot-up hanging

Hi everyone..has anyone had the boot-up process hang at the background? It is normal until then and stops even in the safe mode at this point giving me a black background. I can access the task mgr and browse through processes and open them. I am clueless. Thanks.

Try starting explorer.exe from the task manager Run menu item.

Sometimes a corrupted explorer.exe or missing Shell= key in the registry can cause this.
