[Question] Maintain sound balance when adjusting volume

I'm a music nut, and because of the layout of my room, one of the speakers connected to my computer is closer to me than the other. The obvious way to compensate for this is to just adjust the balance... thing is Windows doesn't seem to do this well. All it really does is vary the individual speaker volume. This is a big problem in that if I turn it up or down too far, one volume hits the limit while the other keeps going, throwing off the balance I've set. If I turn them down too far one speaker cuts out completely while the other hasn't quite reached zero. It even seems to vary as I adjust the volume even if I don't reach that range as I keep finding myself having to re-balance it after adjusting the volume. Is there maybe some third-party program that can do this better?
