IE6 browsing stopped working after nlited winxp install

Hello everyone.

4 days ago I download nlite 1.0.1

I created a slipstreamed Win Xp CD from scratch with Nlite 1.0.1.

The Win XP came from my OEM SP1a disk purchased with my PC.

I used the administrative SP2 I downloaded from MS.

I added the patches and updates available up to the 8th-aug-06 as downloaded from MS

Wrote the nlited CD

Used the CD to do an upgrade install of windows XP Sp2 and updates. Previously the machine was as Win XP SP2 with updates too March 06.

Now i am unable to use IE6 to browse the WEB. I get the "The page cannot be displayed" message after some seconds of no action.

I am writing this from my laptop through the very same ADSL modem/firewall and switch as my problem desktop connects too. So that rules out ADSL problems.

My Outlook email works prefectly for send an receive on the problem desktop. My AVGfree version downloads its updates at the correct times without problem. Spyware doctor also updates correctly. So it seems the network setup is ok on the problem machine.

I installed firefox 1.5 to rule out IE6 stupidity but same problem with firefox.

I can dial up and browse ever so slowly on the problem desktop.

I have gone through the setup of IE6 to no avail.

I can only think that something in the update is preventing ADSL broadband browsing while allowing all other broadband functions to work.

Any one got any thoughts that could help ??

Thankyou for your reply.

I ran LSPFix on the machine, it reported all Ok in this area.

Still no joy with getting it working.

As I can send and receive email on my problem desktop, wouldn't that indicate the winsock settings are OK ?

Any other thoughts on a solution ?

I followed this link on the page you suggested and this winsockxpfix fixed the problem. So yes it was a winsock problem.

Bad news is the generic host process error on each startup is back. This was the reason I did the splipstream update of windows to start with.

Any way thankyou very much for your help.

Might just go and disable DEP.

Uhuh! I wouldn't disable DEP unless necessary. But if u need to then do it.

I am quite confident that my generic host process errors aren't some sort of malware.

I am suspicious of windows update or IPv6 helper service tripping over DEP. Now that web surfing is OK, th event logs show errors from IPv6 helper service and svchost.exe.

I'd leave DEP on for the sake of ur antivirus apps, cos some complain about "important and critical system processes not running".

What err codes are in eventlog (if it bothers u).

The Generic Host Process Errors didn't bother me initially. But after months of popping up Dr Watson started running after the error report was dispatched and gobbled up resources bringing the machine to a halt. I then started killing the Dr Watson process just after startup, but that started causing problems with hardware drivers and the like, probably because Dr Watson was part way through something when I killed it.

The logs tell me that on some boots IPV6 Helper Service Failed to start and that a Generic Host Process Error occured at the time of the previous machine shutdown.

Since yesterday I've done some snooping with some Sysinternals tools. I've found that ATI's Catalyst Control Centre has 2 network ports open and is listening to them all the time.

This might explain why the GHP error returned with repair of the winsock setup allowing ATI to make connection and not release it on shutdown causing svchost.exe to crash on shutdown giving GHP error.

I'm waiting for a response from ATI as too why they have network ports open and how to disable them from staying open.

Anyone got any idea on stopping ATI opening ports

I've re-upgraded my xp installation, the winsock problem returned.

This time I uninstalled IPv6 from all network connections. This fixed the GHP error and winsock problem.
