care_free Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Hi all,I have a few XP pro SP2 boxes and 2 w2k servers. A few weeks ago I began experiencing internet outage for all my xp boxes and one w2k server. This morning the situation reoccurs. I checked the ip addresses by running ipconfig /all command, and I noticed the DNS IP addresses got changed from the internal 192.168.1.1 to 4.3.3.3 and 4.2.2.2. I look these two IP addresses up and find out one is from Verizon and the other from Level 3 Communication Inc. I wonder if my network's got comprimised.J.T.
CptMurphy Posted July 28, 2006 Posted July 28, 2006 Which PC's IP address got changed? Who's your ISP? How the the XP machines get access to the net?
care_free Posted July 28, 2006 Author Posted July 28, 2006 Which PC's IP address got changed? Who's your ISP? How the the XP machines get access to the net?All the XP PC's DNS IP address got changed. All the machines get access to the internet via a Cayman router thru SBC (AT&T) DSL. When I click on the Internet Protocol Properties button in the XP machines, the Obtain address Automatically is checked, but the Use the following DNS server addresses is checked. 4.2.2.2 is for Preferred DNS server and 4.3.3.3 for Alternate DNS server. These entries should not be there since I set up the internal network to obtain DNS server automatically. The internal DNS server is the router whose IP address is set to 192.168.1.1. When I switch back to Obtain DNS server address automatically, I have internet access right away. It seems to me that some of the Microsoft recent updates screw my machines up.J.T.
