Creating a Windows XP Home boot DVD

Hi all, first time poster, got a small problem.

I have a laptop with a CD/DVD drive, and for some reason, the thing won't read CDS (Including the Windows XP install disk), but it WILL read DVDs

So i've tried to make an installation DVD which is the same as the CD (files, boot image etc) but the programs I've tried to use to make this DVD refuse to burn it. I've tried making a multi-boot DVD with just XP on but that doesn't work either, so has anyone got any tips on how to make it actually burn the dvd?
