Lost functionality in command window

I hope someone here may be able to help me otherwise I think I'm gonna have to resort to a full re-install :-(

I have lost a lot of functionality from the command window (ie. the one you get to by "run" -> "command"), it is no longer recognising standard commands.

Two for example are "ping <ip address here>" and "format a:"

It throws up an error message:

'PING' is not recognized as an internal or external command, operable program or batch file.

What's going on? Why have these commands stopped working? And more importantly, how can I fix it?

Nevermind, I figured it out :-)

I have been messing about with some system path variables and had inadvertantly deleted the "c:\windows\system32" path variable. I've put it back, now it all work fine again.
