Sony Vaio PCG-748, PCI Card, CD or Floopy Not Working

Hello, I have been using this laptop for 2 years with Win98. 32MB of Ram. My Toshiba CD-Rom XM-1802B will not reconize any cd's I install. I changed the cd drive out, and slide in the 3.5" Floopy drive. The same result happened. Also, my lucent technologies PCI network adapter card, works for 2 minutes and then dies.....

Was this machine dropped ? ?

I would remove the drive from the bay and use a flashlight to see if anything is amiss with the drive connector.

The laptop has never been dropped. I looked inside the slot area and all looks good in there. I do get a light on for the cd drive and the 3.5" drive. But they just spin and a error message, drive not found or something like that.
