Java & Messenger 7.5

I had a perfectly good system until I tried updating from IE6 to IE7 beta, which I uninstalled as there were some conflicts with various software.

However now I have two silly problems which may be or may not be related:

1. I use Java VM 1.5.07 to view some grahic pages, eg Nasdaq Heatmaps. Now when I open the page, the graphic does not run. I have re-installed Java and no change.

2. Messenger 7.5 now has 6 large blue question marks on the left side. Also re-downloaded.

I have run a/v and anti trojan software and AdAware SE/Xoftspy and nothing untoward

I have also run sfc /scannow, ErrorNuker etc in the hope of finding somethind awry, but nothing shows up

I really don't want to go through a complete re-install, so can someome please guide me to a solution.
