Active Directory and SQL

We have a Helpdesk system we are looking at. It doesn't have built in Active Directory or LDAP services but will work with SQL. We want to use the AD accounts with the Helpdesk system for the user accounts. Is it possible to do some sort of replication or SQL lookup of some sort?

you could replicate the User accounts into the SQL DB, but you wouldn't be able to manage them from AD, 2 seperate DBs...
