Recommended Posts

When installing a program from MSI file, I would like to know:

  1. What files are copyed and where
  2. What is imported in regestry and where

Any ideas? Thanks.

1. it depends on the msi and company that produced it. Some are held in a folder called Registered Products with the CLSID as folder name. It will also depend on how you are installing, i have noticed that doing acrobat reader 707 from cd, doesn't copy the setup files to the directry path, so have to copy them over as part of install so are available for future updates

2. do Start | Run | msiexec /? and it will show the switches available, one being to generate log files with as much or little detail you want.

hope it helps

You can also enable OS-wide MSI logging by creating the REG_SZ value "Logging" in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer, and setting the data to be "voicewarmup".
