USB devices will not install on Windows XP

Hi,

I have Windows XP family edition SP2 and I have a problem with my usb ports. I have 6 ports (built in to the laptop computer) in total but I can not install any device to the computer - I have tried installing a printer and I have tried to use my MP3 Flash drive but I can not. Every time I try to install something, the computer tells me to install the USB Hub. So I try, but Xp does not find any software for it. I have looked on the microsoft web site but it is useless. According to Microsoft, I should have the software on xp, but it is either not installed or it does not work! I can't do anything with these usb ports, please help!
