Finding the version of an exe from the command line

I have written a small ACCESS utility that parses a command line generated text file (DIR) and compares the various elements to make sure that the contents of two directories are the same. This works fine but what I really need is to compare the version numbers of each executable file. I cannot see a DIR option that would provide this. Any ideas?
