deadbug
My UA DVD all works quite happily (well, mostly ) but there is one minor niggle I would really like to sort out.I rearrange the Start Menu->Programs stuff so that everything ends up in "All Users" and arranged in various broad topics, for example I place "mIRC" under an "Internet" folder. So far so good. However, most installations do not offer the option of changing where Start Menu shortcuts are made so I have a .BAT file that runs after WPI has finished and places everything where I want it. Again, this all works very well. The problem comes when I come to update an application later on.Take mIRC as the example above. It adds a shortcut to Start Menu->Programs, which I move to Start Menu->Programs->Internet. Now when a new mIRC is released and I manually install it, there is a new shortcut under Start Menu->Programs (with the original under ...->Internet still there for good measure!).I've poked around in the registry a little without any luck. I'm guessing that most programs (i.e. any that don't give you an explicit option to put Start Menu shortcuts somewhere other than Programs) just hard code the location of the shortcut. So I'm probably out of luck. But if anyone knows any different, I'd be jolly grateful !!Thx
DigeratiPrime
how often do updates for mirc come out? i would just suggest you run your bat/cmd file to kill the shortcut or do that the old fashioned way. otoh have you tried HydraIRC or Chatzilla? deadbug
mIRC was just an example. This issue has bugged me for the last week or so (since I first noticed it) so I went looking for an example. I tried BitComet and it worked (i.e. it noticed somehow that its shortcut was in Programs->Multimedia). mIRC was my next attempt and it produced the niggle I'd like to eliminate.7-Zip also has the same problem.foobar2000 0.9 would have the same problem if installed via /S but its installer allows you to select the group it is added to so I can fix that with an AutoIt script. What I was hoping for is a registry entry or similar that programs use (or often use) to store that info; I've looked without success, so I came here just in case someone else has had the same problem. It's not a big deal and I update stuff sufficiently infreqeuntly that I can manually rearrange stuff without going completely mad, but if I can persuade the computer to do it automagically ... well, that's what they're supposed to be good at! ajua
well, this a problem that you face everytime a new software's version comes out, and as far as i can tell, the only solutions are to re-run your cmd file afer every update, the other is easier too, just right-click and delete the new shorcut folder created by the updated version of your programs (so you can use the original arranged to launch your appz.
