Philmike Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 When ever I send an e-mail with an attachment, i.e. Word document or PDF file, the attachment arrives the other end as a “.dat” file.It only happens when using Outlook 2003 from the PC as if I send the same e-mail and attachment using g-mail it does not happen.Any ideas please? As I say I am using…Outlook 2003Microsoft One Care (although it started to happen before I started using this)Windows XP HomeService Pack Two, with all updatesMy ISP is Pipex and my e-mails are routed though my Domain service 1&1. Although I have had this set up for a couple of years with no problem until a few weeks ago (I used to use AVG instead of One Care). I have even carried out a clean re-install with no luck!!!
nmX.Memnoch Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 This should've gone in the Microsoft Office 2000/2002/2003/XP > Microsoft Outlook forum...but...I don't think the problem is with your mail client. This is more than likely happening somewhere between you and the recipient. Have you contacted your ISP yet to see if they have any suggestions? Also, what are the contents of the .dat file when the person recieves it on the other end? Is it the same file with a simple extension change? Or does the file possibly contain some information as to what may have happened to the original attachment?
Philmike Posted March 23, 2006 Author Posted March 23, 2006 Sorry for posting to the wrong group.I did contact Pipex who said they have never heard of this and do not know why it is happening, 1and1 said something very simular and suggest I use the web e-mail service with my account, it also does not happen with this service, but I need to use Outlook, so both less than helpful.People the other end just get a file simply called ".dat" which they are unable to open. The orignal file name is no where to be seen!!Very Strange!!!
TheFlash428 Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 Dont' have an answer to your problem, but gmail does provided free POP3 downloads which would allow you use outlook with your gmail account.
nmX.Memnoch Posted March 23, 2006 Posted March 23, 2006 (edited) People the other end just get a file simply called ".dat" which they are unable to open.Have they tried opening it with Notepad or Wordpad? Have them save the file and change the extention to .txt. The .dat file may actually contain some information about what's going on...---------------------------------------------EDIT: Google is your friend. http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?...kb;en-us;278061SYMPTOMSWhen you use Microsoft Outlook to send messages through the Internet with attachments and you use the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format, some recipients report that the message includes an additional file called the Winmail.dat file. The Winmail.dat file is usually very small, but you cannot open it in the message. The original message attachment is not always separate from the Winmail.dat file attachment, and may be included in the Winmail.dat file attachment. CAUSEThis problem occurs because the Winmail.dat file is used to preserve formatting that the sending client includes in the message, but the receiving client does not recognize the Winmail.dat file. In Outlook, the Winmail.dat file includes Rich Text Formatting (RTF) instructions. This type of formatting is used with the Microsoft Outlook Rich Text format and when you use Microsoft Word as your e-mail editor.Click the link for RESOLUTION steps.
