Help, Language Problems

I am trying to learn Chinese and i have a few chinese friends that speak using the characters, now in msn it works fine, i can read the characters that they are saying, but in browsers and another messenging service.. it comes up as £$£&()$(_($ etc. i have configured netscape and explorer to read chinese simplified and traditional, even added it into system settings as language. what is going on here? please help asap

Right-click, select Encoding, and choose the correct one (in IE.)

Also make sure that you have the correct fonts installed.

ive tried doing all that, i can read webpages in chinese, but when it comes to chatting in chat rooms, their language is still $%*$%*G^^^*$, do i have to install a browser that is chinese or something?
