My xp operating system crashes every time I click start, then all programs?

has anybody had this problem?

no have not installed any new software.

my problem is after I click start and then click all programs, if I don't click a program within 3-5 seconds my keyboard and mouse stop responding?, and I have to reboot the operating system?

no i am not using nlite, i have used system restore (same problem?) i have run scandisk (same problem?) the pc just locks up and i have to reboot?

Temporarily remove the start menu\Programs folder (move it somewhere else) and see if the problem persists.
