Does the portable hard drive appear inside the disk manager console? If so, you may just need to assign it a drive letter.

If not, look at device manager and see if there are any unknown USB devices or USB devices etc. that are not installed correctly. If there are, then uninstall the device and reinstall with the appropriate drivers.

I use portable USB drives on all my 2003 servers to put backup files on. Works like a champ!

Good luck.

Yeh, I have similar problems, but I think this problem is much easier to solve.

tguy is probably right, so here is the solution:

[*] Goto Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Computer Management

[*] Under Storage select Disk Management

[*] You should now see your portable hard drive - Right click and select change drive letter and paths

[*] Add a new drive letter

If this doesn't work then it may be a result of compatibility issues between NTFS on Windows 2003 and NTFS on WinXP. I have no solution for this as of yet.
