Resurr Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 Hey just wondering if anyone knows how i would go about controling a linux based machine from windows xp pro.I plan on buying a cpu second hand and wanted to have it for like a gaming server / file server for when i have lans and for my house. I do not wish to have a monitor or keyboard or mouse ect just the basic cpu connected to my computer via a network connection. Does this sound possible and if so can anyone please give me any info that they can? Also is there a way to bypass the keyboard cheak in the bios? I have never tryed that before so i dont know if it can be dune and as i am at work ai cannot cheak right now in my bios. Any help would be great. Thank you.Title Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on.--Zxian
EchoNoise Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 You can either use SSH or VNCVNC is probably the most easiest to go for

cluberti Posted February 28, 2006 Posted February 28, 2006 If you are a true Linux newbie, which it seems you are, you may want to try one of the more "newb-friendly" distributions like Knoppix. You can either install it, or run it directly from the CD (known as a "live-cd"). I would suggest you get your feet wet that way (Knoppix, perhaps live-cd) before installing a full-blown and somewhat less newb-intuitive distribution like Gentoo.Don't get me wrong, Gentoo is great, but like all flavors of Linux it does require some user-configuration post install to get things working "just right", whereas the live-cd of Knoppix makes no such claims, and runs pretty good right off of the CD.Good luck .
Zxian Posted March 2, 2006 Posted March 2, 2006 Original post slightly edited. Just grammatical changes. Please try to use proper grammar when posting. The original post was one big long sentence, which makes it harder for users to read what it is that you're trying to say.As for your question, I agree with cluberti that Gentoo is a bit hard for a beginner to pick up. I would recommend SuSe or Ubuntu. Both are relatively easy to set up and have good documentation on the web.
