KRH Posted February 21, 2006 Posted February 21, 2006 From Control Panel>Power Options, I have my monitor set to shut off after 15 minutes of inactivity but since installing Win98SE2ME, it doesn't shut off at all. Is there any cure for that?
LLXX Posted February 22, 2006 Posted February 22, 2006 Does your system support powering off the monitor and other devices? Some older machines don't have this (ACPI?) support.
KRH Posted February 22, 2006 Author Posted February 22, 2006 Does your system support powering off the monitor and other devices?Yes. It worked fine until I installed Win98SE2ME.
MDGx Posted February 23, 2006 Posted February 23, 2006 (edited) Yes. It worked fine until I installed Win98SE2ME.I have no idea at the moment why this happens, but I'll investigate, and if I find a fix or explanation, I'll post here:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349KRH:Please post any 98SE2ME related issues from now on in the 98SE2ME dedicated forum:http://www.msfn.org/board/?showtopic=46349Hope this helps.__________________________________More info, which might help, is already present in READ1ST.TXT under "KNOWN BUGs + FIXES" section:http://www.mdgx.com/9s2m/READ1ST.TXTBUG:After installing 98SE2ME option 1 or option 2 which replaces USER.EXE amongother WinME system files [see "* Option 2:" under "98SE2ME.PIF COMPLETE GUIDE"chapter further above]on portable (laptops + notebooks) computers with powersaving features turned on you may experience power saving, standby, suspend, restart in MS-DOS mode and/or shutdown errors, because:- WinME USER.EXE does NOT natively support "Restart in MS-DOS mode".- All USER.EXE versions have to call functions in VPOWERD.VXD for shutdownand standby, and WinME VPOWERD.VXD is very different from the Win98 SE one.FIX:If you experience such errors while using patched WinME USER.EXE 4.90.3001installed by 98SE2ME option 1 + option 2, replace WinME USER32.DLL + USER.EXE4.90.3001 with patched Win98 SE USER32.DLL + USER.EXE 4.10.2231:http://support.microsoft.com/?id=291362Direct download [469 KB]:http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../291362usa8.exeor (re)install Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2):http://exuberant.ms11.net/98sesp.html Edited February 23, 2006 by MDGx
KRH Posted February 24, 2006 Author Posted February 24, 2006 or (re)install Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2)That looks like a very simple and safe solution to try, and I will. Thanks. Sorry that I seem to have posted in the wrong place again, as I have in the past. I could have sworn I had it right this time. I've bookmarked your link for future reference.
KRH Posted February 25, 2006 Author Posted February 25, 2006 (edited) I'm pretty mystified now. I did reinstall Gape's Win98 SE Service Pack 2 (SP2). As it asked me if I wanted to keep newer files than it was installing, I didn't see user.exe or user32.dll so I answered yes to all and wound up with the same version of those files: 4.90.3001. Then I installed the Microsoft update after downloading it from the direct download link and still wound up with 4.90.3001. What I am I doing wrong?edit: I found the versions of the files I was looking for in my W98seold folder, where they had been placed by SP2 before I installed Win98SE2ME, and simply copied them over from DOS. That seems to have fixed not only this problem, but also the one I described in this thread (no shutdown screen).I would like say something about the adventures I had trying to install the update from MS. The download of the 469 KK file said it was "complete" after about 280 KBs, then installation was aborted with an error message. After repeating the download and trying a couple times, I tried another Googled link. I still got the smaller download but the installation seemed to work. The fact that the relevant files weren't updated makes me think that maybe they've been removed from the package.Perhaps it's strange that I was having the problems with power management since I don't have a laptop or notebook. My motherboard is an Asus SP97v, which, according to what I've read, was the hottest selling motherboard around in the early part of 1998. There's nothing proprietary about it, unless it's the bios update that I did designed to enhance support for the AMD K62 Plus 500 cpu (which I'll actually install if I'm ever lucky enough to find one).I would like to ask one more question: Is changing those files likely to have any overall effect on the performance of Win98SE2ME? MDGx Posted February 27, 2006 Posted February 27, 2006 (edited) When you install Gape's SP or the MS fix:http://ftp.isu.edu.tw/pub/CPatch/msupdate/.../291362usa8.exeyou should select to NOT keep the newer USER.EXE + USER32.DLL files, because SP installs the older 4.10.2231 builds [the ones designed specifically for 98 SE], and you need them in order to see the wait/shutdown logos. In my experience USER*.* from WinME are faster.
