deaop Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 I am new here. Came here from a google search.Problem! I have a Dell inspiron that is 5 years old. It is a Pen lll with 256 ram. I got it from a friend and it now has XP on it. I want to remove the XP and replace it with Win 98. I have both CD's. I want to run some programs that will not run on XP. Don't need internet.Trouble is I can't find anyway to uninstall XP. Is there anything or anyway to get to where I want to go?ThanksTitle Edited - Please follow new posting rules from now on.--Zxian
JoeMSFN Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 Use Ranish Partition Manager. See my post here for the links. Except also use it to delete the Windows XP partition, In addition to/instead of the boot sector. No need to fill the partition with zeros, just use "delete" to delete the partition. XP is uninstalled!
atomizer Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 you could use a partition manager, but why not just insert the 98 installation disk and install the OS? the 98 disk should have the partition tools and it will automate the process for you. i'd also suggest doing the complete format (overwrite everything on the drive with 0's) rather than the quick format.post back if you need more help.
anoxan Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 i'd also suggest doing the complete format (overwrite everything on the drive with 0's) rather than the quick format.post back if you need more help.omg, I finally learned how/what people use to zero a drive!lol, I've always read posts of someone zeroing their drive, but I didn't know if they used a third-party partition manager, or if the ms manager could do it..lol, now I know why xp always seems to be happier when I completely reformat to do a reinstall
atomizer Posted January 8, 2006 Posted January 8, 2006 i've done it both ways and never had any problems that i noticed, but i know that a complete format is recommended by a lot of websites. sometimes, if i'm in a hurry or just testing an installation, i'll do a quick format.
deaop Posted January 8, 2006 Author Posted January 8, 2006 Hi, me again.I used the 98 cd to boot on and formated the hard drive. After the format the setup preparing to install Windows gave me a message CDR101: Not ready reading drive D Abort, Retry, Fail?rDoes this mean that the CD drive is not reading the CD or is this something else. Is there anyway around this? Thanks
deaop Posted January 8, 2006 Author Posted January 8, 2006 Hi,Ok! I shut down restarted and the CD drive read the 98 CD. The install is working ok so far. Don't know what the problem was before but seems to be solved. Thanks for your help and direction.
