[Help] - System Crash

foothill

Recommended Posts

I have a problem I can't figure out.

I have a Microtel computer

P4 with 224mb ram

running XP Pro

It crashes everytime I try to load some games with cd required to play.

lite games like starcaft & hoyle work with out crahing. But Alice, sims theme park, and lilo & stictch (i'm setting this up for my daughter) flash the blue screen for a split second and then completely restart the computer.

I was running wind 98 when this started and thought that an upgared my help to no avail.

I upgraded to directX 9, Reinstalled drivers thinking it may be the Cd- rom, even change out the drive, and reinstalled firm ware for the drive. upgraded graphics drivers and sound drivers nothing is working. I scaned for virsuses and found nothing

When I got the computer second hand I reinstalled windows to clean out all the unwanted stuff and started reinstalling drivers. So I think it might be a driver problem, but it was working after I finished instlling all the apps. and then today it just stopped working

any idea what could be cuasing this?

I think you should check the capacity of the power supply. Starcraft and Hoyle are low consumed power games, But the other games are all complex 3D games. At that time, the Cd-Rom and the display card are using up the power.

Just a surmise, because you didn't mention the Blue Screen, I guess the problem hard to impute the drivers.

Sorry, I didn't see your first posting carefully. Have you checked the system event or application event? I hope OS wrote sth before displaying the blue face. Did you catch the error in blue screen? you can disable the "automatically restart" in "System properities"->"Advanced"->"startup and recovery"

ok this is what I got from the blue screen:

DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical inforomation:

***STOP: 0X000000D1 (0X000022BO, 0X00000002, 0X00000000, 0XF99406FA)

*** ALCXWDM.SYS - Address f99406fa base at fa98c300, DateStamp 435f3978

where do I find the system event?

No need - it appears you have an issue with a misbehaving driver (it appears to be an advance logic soundcard driver). Have you updated this driver recently? If not, I'd suggest you do so. The error states that the driver is attempting to read a memory address, but it's IRQL is not what Windows expected it to be - this causes the kernel to "bugcheck" with a STOP 1D error and the name of the driver which caused it.

You could also uninstall the device from device manager (do not reinstall it), and try to recreate the crash again. If the driver really is the issue, the problem should not occur.

ALCXWDM.SYS is a part of the sound driver. have you upgraded the sound driver? I think it's due to the MS sound driver. Please use the other driver to replace it. This is download link from realtek.

http://www.realtek.com.tw/downloads/dlac97...8&Software=True

or you can download the driver from the mobo site.

you can run "eventvwr.msc /s" to get the events.

Ok, I reinstalled all drivers, I downloaded from the Microstar web site. made sure thaey were all right

I think i might have had the wrong IDE controller.

I then tested the game and got the blue screen again. But this time the ALCXWDM.SYS is not there

this is what I have now

IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL

Technical inforomation:

***STOP: 0X00000023 (0X00000023, 0X000000FF, 0X00000001, 0X804DFD16)

No need - it appears you have an issue with a misbehaving driver (it appears to be an advance logic soundcard driver). Have you updated this driver recently? If not, I'd suggest you do so. The error states that the driver is attempting to read a memory address, but it's IRQL is not what Windows expected it to be - this causes the kernel to "bugcheck" with a STOP 1D error and the name of the driver which caused it.

You could also uninstall the device from device manager (do not reinstall it), and try to recreate the crash again. If the driver really is the issue, the problem should not occur.

Sorry, somehow I overlooked this post I'll try it

uninstalled the audio device and did not get the blue screen but the program locked up and closed

with this error code

AppName: lilopc.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.1 ModName: d3dim700.dll

ModVer: 5.3.2600.2180 Offset: 0000afe1

just tryed another game and it let me start the game this time but then the program locked up (no blue screen) this is the error code:

AppName: alice.exe AppVer: 1.0.0.0 ModName: alice.exe

ModVer: 1.0.0.0 Offset: 0002549f

I must have the wrong audio driver but it looks like something else is wrong

A google search raised my eyebrows... both of these are Disney Games, are they not?

Go to Trend Micro's Housecall and scan your computer for viruses. Do this in Safe Mode with Networking. Also, download and install the big three of anti-spyware: Ad-Aware, Spybot S&D, and Microsoft Anti-Spyware Beta. Install all of the programs and update them. Then boot into Safe Mode and run their scanners, one at a time.

Let us know how things go after that. :)

EDIT - Wait a sec... I was all wrong. STOP 0x00000023 refers to FAT_FILE_SYSTEM.

A problem occurred within a read or write to a FAT16 or FAT32 file system drive. There may be a physical problem with the disk, or an Interrupt Request Packet (IRP) may be corrupted. Other common causes include heavy hard drive fragmentation, heavy file I/O, problems with some types of drive-mirroring software, or some antivirus software. I suggest running ChkDsk or ScanDisk as a first step; then disable all file system filters such as virus scanners, firewall software, or backup utilities. Check the file properties of FASTFAT.SYS to ensure it matches the current OS or SP version. Update all disk, tape backup, CD-ROM, or removable device drivers to the most current versions.

Run chkdsk /r to check your drive for errors and fix any that may exist on the drive...

It coud be a virus or spyware (I think there were some disney games awhile back that actually shipped with virus-like code - I don't remember which ones, so I'd check to be safe), or it could be a bad install of directx on the box (I noticed one of the .dll's was a d3d dll).

Good catch Zxian :).
