A project which the United Nations is undertaking using XML (extensible markup language) has gained support from microsoft. The project is intended to give small/medium company's an alternative to traditional paperwork currently required to be completed by the company to allow them to cross country borders. At a press conference in Geneva, microsoft demonstrated how the UN's project, called UNeDOCS, will work in their InfoPath application.

UneDocs (United Nations Extentions for aligned electronic trade Documents) was started in 2002 by the UN's Economic Commision for Europe, with the aim of using XML to create an electronic equivelant for paper trade documents currently utilising the existing Electronic Data Interchange standards.

The XML based documents are currently being drafted so that they may be accepted and understood internationally. In addition to the UneDocs system, the UN have also designed an online support system to provide traders with an assistance center where they can get assistance with understanding and completing the documents.
