IBM unleashes T-REX

At a press release on tuesday, IBM officially confirmed the release date of their new z990 mainframe offerings, codename T-REX. IBM stated that they will be scaling down their mainframe offerings from 42 to a mere 4, and that the first two models of the z990 mainframes, the A08 and the B16 are scheduled for release on June 16.

They have retained the same 16-processor configurations for these first releases that is available in the current z900 offerings, but have designed a new 16-chip multichip module for the z990 offerings. This new module is said to be half the size of current offerings, and to contain 3.2 billion transistors. Built using their silicon-on-insulator technology, IBM's new modules will largely improve the performance of the new mainframes over the current offerings.

From september onwards, customers purchasing these mainframes will have IBM's new "ON/OFF Capacity on demand" pricing structure. This pricing scheme allows administrators/network engineers to upgrade their mainframes on demand according to their capacity requirements.
