I want to disable sfc without reinstalling windows. from what I've read, this can be done by replacing sfc_os.dll with a patched version and a reg edit.

easy, right? (life is easy like that! :D)

unfortunately, no. I can't replace the file because it's already in use. guess it's doing its job pretty well... ¬.¬

I've tried safe mode, as that usually works for everything else...not happening.. and xp doesn't have a real command prompt so I'm sol on that option too

so I try to use replacer to do it for me. however, my computer apparently can't open cmd files. I'll be asking about this soon, but in the mean time....

how can I replace this dll?

edit: thread made for my borked prompt..

google's my mistress; that was the first page I came across when getting into this little project. however, 'copy' doesn't copy files that are in use.. :/

I got the reg tweak down pact, it's just that **** file.. I thought I could replace it in linux, but I've never had good luck with ntfs in nix.

idea! you think bartpe could be of some help on this? if I'm not mistaken, it's more or less a live windows install...

regards! :P

this would replace the file, but if the file is present in dllcache it would be replaced again.

Im not sure if it is there, so someone else have to answer that

boot, F8, failsafe mode (or whatever it is called), change... there is also a reg haXx for disabling SFC. For the reg haXx i am sure it is in here @ msfn.org forums, try the "Customizing Windows" subforum...

If you've got your XP CD, boot to the CD and use the recovery console option. This will give you a console where you can replace the file, both in system32 and dllcache without Windows actually running. Either that, or put the HDD in another machine and replace it there.

recovery console...lol, forgot about that :P

@ralin:

it won't be replaced if I put a copy in the dllcache folder as well. :)

thanks for the help!
